Of Super Deluxe, and Anthi Maalai from Monster

I watched Super Deluxe. No, this is not going to be a review of the movie, but rather reasons to watch it.
You see, Super Deluxe was banned in Malaysia for somewhat absurd reasons. The character played by Vijay Sethupathi, Shilpa, is a transgender. Yeah. Due to that. So, it did not play in any of our cinemas.
The same fate fell upon Kadaram Kondan despite it being filmed in Malaysia. Yes, we are a conservative country. Wink. But I love my country. So, I abide by our censorship boards decisions.
Back to Super Deluxe. Read that the dashing Vijay Sethupathi won Best Actor in Melbourne. And Gayathrie won, too. Claps, claps, claps.
Super Deluxe is a movie that invokes a thousand thoughts. No fancy locations, dance sequences or things that the mass movies have. And despite this, it scored a big ten for me.
I loved Vijay Sethupathi's son's character. Rasukutty. His innocence. Such a natural. Also, his beautiful, plain, devout, faithful and homely wife - Gayathrie. Their extended family.
Then there's Samantha Akkineni, my favourite actress. And Fahad Fazil. The couple whose arranged marriage was based on caste and creed.
And Ramya Krishnan and her adolescent son and his bunch of friends.
A pervert policeman. His pathetic team.
A gangster. His wall mounted TV.
A preacher who survived the tsunami. His devoted follower.
An alien. Her quest to find a companion.
The beauty of the movie is how all the characters connect with each other. The moral we learn along the movie. The movie has a bit of everything.
Don't read a review and decide about the movie. A review is only an individual's perception. Their point of view. Give it a chance. If you enjoy good movies, Super Deluxe is on 2019's must watch.
I didn't review. See. I don't have to spoil the momentum of the movie. This is something you should watch and ponder and rave about, once over. I did.
I smiled the usual Cheshire Cat, that I usually do. A smile of appreciation to great upcoming Tamil directors.
So, yes. Go watch.

I also watched Kolaikaran. The one with Arjun and Vijay Anthony. Hmm. I like Vijay Anthony. He has that demure acting capability. I'm not and have never been a fan of Arjun. The movie was blah, if you know what I mean. Watch it at your own discretion. I comment no further.

Mogan and I just returned from the capital of the country a weekend ago. We went to visit his family. It was a beautiful long ride to and fro. He bought me McNuggets and Fries from the Drive Thru when all I wanted was a Chocolate Sundae. I ate them, nevertheless. Wink. He didn't stop by the quaint town of Ipoh although I really wanted to have lunch there. He said some other time. Wink. We went to the very revered and auspicious Jalan Baru Muniswaran Temple. A short but blessed visit.

Life is beautiful. Being nice to others is a good thing. Not talking bad about others is a very good thing. And wanting the best for others, too, is an immensely great trait. I used too. Because we must learn to want good for others as we would want it for ourselves. Right ?

India is months away. Karnataka most probably. Or the Northern parts of Andra Pradesh. I'll update you all. India is my muse. It always will be. I hallucinate being there quite regularly.

I love this song. I watched the movie, although not in full and found it quite amusing. Will watch the remaining parts and let you know if the movie was as good as its songs. Monster with SJ Surya & the beautiful Priya Bavani Shankar.

Chekka Sivantha Vaanam - Yes !

Hello everyone.

July is about to bid goodbye. Here I am. As always. Trying to beat a monthly deadline. I am an ace at procrastination. Yes, I am. On days, when I am way too lazy, I gift myself extra extra time to idle away.

I watched Chekka Sivantha Vaanam today. Finally. I was glued and didn't leave the sofa even during advertisement. It was an awesome one. Mani Sir must be a perfectionist. This movie is an example. The flow doesn't stop. It is fast paced, interesting and mind blowing. His other revolutionary gangster movie, after Nayagan, I feel.

I have heard of the BGM before. But, listening to it, today, in the movie, was a whole new experience. How apt for each situation. Fit in so well.

A friend of mine - Arti, has been asking me to watch Gully Boy. A Hindi movie. I don't understand the language. I like good movies, though. I have yet to but I promise I will. She has such great taste and we share the same thoughts on many movies.

Super Singer 7. As Benny Dayal said, it is the very best of seasons. I root without fail for Mukkuthi Murugan or Mumu and the ravishing Puniya. What great talents. And there is also, Sam Vishal for his exotic coarse voice. And Roshini. Did you see her performance during the Devotional Round ? I had goosebumps and tears. It was astounding.

Bigg Boss 3, Tamil ? I don't follow. I have watched a couple of times. Recently watched only to see what Kamal had to say regarding false accusations and character assassination of the very respected Cheran. I felt what that Meera did was utmostly wrong. To not react at that moment but to dwell on it later and create a ruckus out of it is so inhumane. My opinion.

It's hot here on most days. My cousins in Tamil Nadu said it rains every few days there. And the climate is awesome for a vacation. Yes, we are in the midst of planning. Our tour operator, Indian Panorama suggested Vijayawada, Vizhag or Karnataka, since we have hardly ventured there. Planning still. Will update once finalized.

I want to watch Aadai. The beautiful Amala Paul. She is a great actress. It's not playing anywhere near my hometown. I heard all the noise regarding her nudity. I wish people will stop being hypocrites. I did see the trailer. Didn't see anything vulgar in it. Some Tamil movies project immense vulgarity despite the heroines clothed. Some movies, you can't sit and watch with kids around. But did Aadai do that ? Even the trailer is bizarre. Just that. Not vulgar. But people.... Argh...

Kadaram Kondan is a banned in my country. Do not ask me why. Just like Super Deluxe, this too. I have no comments. But as told in my earlier paragraph, people are just hypocrites. I have no further comments.

I love the song in Kadaram Kondan. Thaarame. Sid Sriram. So beautiful. Marriage is life long promise, come what may. It takes so many things to make it last forever. Patience is one. Lots of it. I'm smiling. And motivation for your other half. Even in your angriest, do not mock them. Love accepts the person as they are. We learn all these in lessons of marriage. I'm smiling again because I sound like a philosopher.

Vijay Sethupathi - Dayummmmmmm !!!

For starters, those of you who are unsure of the word dayum (apologies, if they are a little harsh), refers to the word 'damn' exaggerated. I mean, when we say, darmmmmmmmm in an astonished voice, it sounds some what like dayum. Urban dictionary.

So, yeah ! The Vijay Sethupathi is an ace actor. And he plays his parts perfectly. I am a fan. I think he oozes the manly charm. The Tamil Azhagan. Tall, dark, handsome. I have always been his fan, since his Naduvala Konjum Pakkatha Kaanom days. And in his recent '96, I fell flat. What a character. Present day chivalry.

I didn't watch Junga. Wanted so much to watch Super Deluxe since it had Samantha too, but unfortunately, it was banned in Malaysia due to the transgender issue. Enna kodumai Sir ithu ?

It's a Saturday night here. Drizzling outside. I'm very much a home person. So, nothing soothes me like home sweet home. I thought of this post since evening and compiling them weren't easy. Halo everyone !! It's June, once again. That time of the year, when my hero celebrates his birthday. Yup, Mogan's birthday is in the mid of June. It is norm for us to celebrate his birthday as mine, and mine and his. It may sound a little weird to many, but we have been keeping up this tradition for some couple of years now.

Well, you see. On his birthday, I wake up to a birthday wish and vice versa. It's fun actually. Love is kind of weird. You find joy in the small things. And it's  a learning journey. Everything seasons. Relationships, too. And this is us.

The two day Eid holidays is about to end soon. I had two days of undisturbed rest at my mom's place. Mogan is away for work in the country's capital. I was supposed to join him but couldn't get last minute tickets for the train nor flights.

I didn't watch any movies in recent times. New movies, I mean. Movies that I have watched before, yes. But nothing new. Not Majili. Not Oh! Baby! Both being Samantha's. And me being her ardent fan.

Watched bits of Thotti Jaya, bits of Veyil, bits of Snegitheye. All in bits. None in full. Read some reviews on recent Tamil movies. Imaika Nodigal seems to have many positive ones. I haven't actually. Did catch some snippets of it. But in full, not yet. I should I guess. I like Nayantara and Aadharva. And of course, the very talented Vijay Sethupathi.

It's fifteen minutes to 10pm now. My GERD has improved tremendously, thanks to my daily consumption of yogurt or kefir, which I alternate. I do get them once in a while, especially when I have too much of coffee or spicy stuff. I'm learning what I can take and not, gradually. I have reduced my food portions. And I don't eat excessively - anymore. Being petite does not guarantee a healthy body. That's the lesson I have learned.

I love this song. It is a classic one. I love the melody and the lyrics. Love is defined so beautifully. Old songs are majestic. Like this. I owe Appa my gratitude for introducing me to such beautiful ones. Songs such as this remain forever. Just like love.

May '19. Good Tamil movies to suggest, anyone ?

A friend of mine opened up to me in the lift. We were in the midst of talking about the weekend being just two days away when she told me she was rushing to the hospital to see her ailing dad. He has been battling cancer for 7 years and is currently in stage four. I was shocked. Speechless for a moment. I had tears welling in my eyes. How can I not ? Dad. Father. Appa. The most precious word to me.

If you've read many of my posts, you will understand that this blog begun with memories of my father. The greatest love of my life who left too soon but has never my heart and soul. He remains an integral part of my life. Not a day goes by without me thinking of him or the memories we shared. It has been more than twenty years since his passing. But he is in my life - everyday. Somewhere, somehow. The beauty of parents. They leave their marks and prints on you.

We had a three day weekend here. So, I rested well. Did cooking. Cleaned up the house. Lazed around. Had great conversations over food with my loved ones. Talked for nearly an hour over the phone with my precious extended family, which was long overdue. Read some great articles. And, here we are, hours before Tuesday, when everything goes back to norm.

Hey guys, do you know where can I actually get a legal download of the movie Majili, with subtitles that is ? Beep me ya, if you know. Watched some snippets in Insta and the movie seems lovely. Zealot kind of a movie. That's why yours truly is so enthusiastic. Besides being a true fan of the ravishing Samantha Akkineni. 

May 23rd is just around the corner. A favourite girlfriend's birthday. And "the" day for Indian politics - which I know nil of. But I want to know the results, nevertheless. We had a rocking win. Malaysia. Our 4th Prime Minister returned with a bang to helm the country as the 7th, from a very corrupted government. I adore him. Tun Mahathir Mohamed, despite being 94 this July 10th, is wise and well read and put our country high on the pedestal. He is facing a lot of issues with the present inexperienced cabinet but he knows his job well, and there are four years more for improvements and miracles. Here's wishing my India the very best !!

I do not miss India as much, but she runs through my mind daily. Memories I have had while I was there. The recent one was of the Padmavathi Temple in Tirupathi. Fondly known as Alamelumanga Temple, the beauty of this place of worship is very prominent when the crowd is lesser and the lights are all lit up. The aura. Simply beautiful and peaceful. India. Is. Plain. Beautiful.

I don't watch serials. Here and there at times. And, I get them all mixed up. Amma does though. Vijay TV serials. As they don't run for infinity. She is watching right now. So, I'm blogging. Or else, we would be talking over things, and life and news and such.

It has been weeks since I actually watched a decent Tamil movie. The last I watched was the excruciatingly long Marvel - End Game. Three long hours. The only other one I have watched is Antman. I loved that. But being totally clueless of the Marvel characters, made the movie seem ages long. The first hour was purely conversations. The second, flashbacks. The third, the war. And this is the first time, I got acquainted to Thor. Funny, right ? I've never seen him before. If you ask me to watch again, I will not, but it was pretty decent. Except for the length.

I'm looking forward to July. Meeting up with 5 of my best friends. My darling uni mates. We've planned an overnight stay. We have all been busy and occupied. Finalizing a date that we all can agree on, has not come easy. But we managed somehow. Hopefully it will go as planned. I miss those girls and the memories we shared during four years of our uni days. They have remained an integral part of my life and we chat daily on this private whatsapp group.

Of Majili, Petta, Tenma, Kon Mari & the Life of Ram

Good morning everybody ! It's a beautiful day here in my hometown. A little breezy with the ray of sun shining moderately.  Our back door neighbors are Indian (this is a predominantly Chinese neighborhood) and their music is blaring. But I'm smiling, as I slurp on my home made soupy noodles and a cup of warm water. Smiling because it is IR. Right now, this very second it is, "Jil Jil Jil Manathil".

The weather is getting a lot better. We have daily rain showers in the evening. So, the nights are less humid and the morning are somewhat cold. Mogan is working today. So, we are skipping the ritual Saturday date. Akka celebrated her birthday last Thursday. We had a tiny celebration at home and the dinner outing is supposed to be later in the evening, but I'm unsure if we will go. Amma is a huge fan of Super Singer and we are barely days away from the grand Finale. So you understand the situation, right.

I was swiping through my Insta account, and found rave reviews of Majili - the Telegu movie starring my very favourite Samantha Akkineni and her real life husband, Chaitanya. I cannot understand Telegu much but I can try to put the words together and figure out what they are trying to say. Telegu is widely spoken in Malaysia. My best friend from uni is one and I sort of learned some from her. So, I'm definitely planning to watch. The trailer seems awesome. There's a real feeling to it. And, one caption on Twitter praises it as "another cult love movie". Hmmmm... Cult love movie ? Like '96 and Moonu. No idea. But I promise to watch Majili a.s.a.p and update you guys about it.

I loved '96. It was stellar. Moonu ? Not really. Dhanush and Shruthi nailed their parts but it was too melancholic for my liking.

Do you know ? Vijay Sethupathi's Super Deluxe was banned in Malaysia. Probably the only country in the world where it has. Pahhhhhhhhhh.... And the reason, absurd. I'm not going to dwell on it. You can google and read about it, but I'm a little disappointed, though. The ratings for it is rocket high and many of my favourite movie reviewers are bragging about it. Hmmm.. That's my sad intonation.

I do not know how good Petta was. Many said one of Superstar's best to date. For me, I'd say it was Kaala, as I have yet to watch Petta. Kaala was too good. Rajini Sir as himself. No superhero get up. No frills. Just him being him. And a beautiful storyline with an equally talented cast. From his wife, his children, the people in his area, his ex girlfriend, the villain. And the songs. Uffffff. Santhosh Narayanan. Kaala, to me, is a must watch. Even Amma, who rarely watches, agrees.

Last night, while scrolling through some videos, I watched this talent show titled Star Singer. I believe the duo are from Tenma. The girl is Isaivani and the guy Muthu. I have never been a fan of Gaana or rap, but I loved their presentation.  I do follow Tenma. Heard of it after watching Pariyerum Perumal. They have many mind provoking themes in their songs. Issues that the present generation should consider of. Do watch Tenma, if you have the time. They are truly soulful.

I have finished my bowl of noodles. I have homemaking duties now. :)

I heard this song in the car, somewhere last week. One of those happy tunes that put you in a positive mood. Just watched the video, while looking up the song in Youtube. Such contrast. Seems more of a heartbreak song. Nevertheless, SPB nails  every emotion possible. I cannot remember watching this movie, though. Have you ?

By the way, Hello everyone. It has been a while since I wrote, and this is my post for March, I believe.

The weather here in Malaysia, my home state of Kedah particularly is beyond words hot and humid. Months since it rained and our garden is in a sad state despite us watering it. On most days we keep indoors and nights are totally dependent on the air conditioner. And, we wear more cotton, these days. Read the newspaper today and it reports that our dams are heading to critical condition. Hot, hot and hot. And I truly hope, rain answers us real real soon.

I am watching Super Singer Junior 2019, as I am writing this. Who am I vouching for ? Undoubtedly Rithvik, Viper Vaaiyan. He is natural and super talented and above all, he sings with ease and no whatsoever signs of stress.

How about Poovaiyar ? Guppies. I was never a fan until I watched the video on his life. This boy is only 9 and yet he is the breadwinner in his family. He is supporting 2 of his siblings to further their education. Is not that something that deserves a huge applause ? Okay. Agree with many. This is a talent show. He does not lack it but he is not as brilliant as Ritvik, but he is a winner in his own rights. At least that is what I believe. He is bound to win as Vijay TV harps on sms votes and Guppies has a huge following. My point of view. Take note.

What else ? Hmmm. Our new government is trying hard. Rome was not built in a day and most of us are giving them every chance possible despite the lackadaisical attitude of some new politicians. But, our Prime Minister is a blessing. He is wise in his words and moves and we are all thankful for his return to the political arena.

We have yet to go on a vacation this year. No planning, even. Soon. Soon and will keep you updated.

On another note, I was diagnosed with GERD somewhere in early December 2018. It was a harrowing period in my life. I was referred to my local hospital's emergency unit, even. From shortness in breath and immense chest pain to sleepless nights as well as lack of appetite. I lost about 5 kgs during that period and dropped to a scary 46kgs. I tried everything. From exercising daily to watching a strict diet. It helped me improve my condition. But I had rapid improvement after consuming yogurt as a part of my daily meal. The last medication I had was on January 7th 2019. None since. I do get slight acid reflux but it is still very much under control. I will write about it more soon. It would be helpful to those of you having the same symptoms as me.

So, I guess this is all for today. March the 23rd 2019.

Happy Birthday Amma !

A quick hello to everyone !!
I write in my thoughts, especially when I'm travelling. I assume I'll remember what to write later but when I sit down to do the real thing, I run out of words. They sound a little made up, which I'm totally not in favour of. I love things written in the moment. Like now. The flow.
Amma celebrates her birthday today. My goddess. My life. The reason to my very existence. I'm no one without her and that is fact.
I owe her a million thanks and a trillion sorry. And zillion hugs and infinite love.  A mother is so strong. She handles everything with so much vigour. Mine too. Amma had a hard time putting up with me during my teenage and earLy twenty something years. Eventually, I learned that no ones love would compare to your parents, that's why they are termed as God sent.
I spend a lot of time with Amma now. I appreciate everything she does. I enjoy talking to her about current happenings. She is very well read. You can ask her about world news and she will confidently update you. She watches Tamil serials and movies, on and off. She reads extensively. And she enjoys doings educational maths and science. I'd say I inherit part of my intelligence from her.
During my recent illness, which I plan to write in length, very soon, Amma was by my side all the time. She healed me. With her love and care and affection. I'm very much better now. Amma continues to monitor and my eating habits and sedentary lifestyle so that I do not fall into the same rut again.
It was a small family affair. We had a hazel nut cake. And I bought her whole roasted coffee beans from Starbucks. She loves coffee, that too, at 4pm every day. Amongst her routine.
It's 10.15pm here. I sleep early on most days. I get lethargic easily.

Love your parents. We are nothing without them. God gave them to us, to cherish and love, as we do Him.

Of Lunar New Year and Love !

Hola !!!
The Chinese Lunar New Year has begun. The year of the Pig, it is. Malaysia is on a two day national holiday. For us, it has been rather hectic.
We spent Monday night at my sister in law's place. Slept real late. Woke up a little late, too and headed of for brunch. I did the laundry and some cooking. And, tidied up the house.
Today, Amma & I went to my Grandma's house in a city which is approximately 54kms from where we live. Alor Setar is the capital of our state, Kedah. The weather, unfortunately, was blazing hot when we reached around 10am. Yes, it's real humid here, right now. Dry season, synonymous with the Chinese New Year festivity. But Paati's house is surrounded by lots of plants and the marble flooring kept us cold and cozy.
Paati's house is a picture of tranquillity. It's an epitome of a true home sweet home. Paati is no longer around but her home remains as beautiful as ever. Void of her actual presence but a thousand memories of her are etched all over. My aunt lives there now and has maintained the house excellently. The home, I mean.
I'm sharing a couple of photos of them instead of a song today.
Because, nothing is as precious as this God given life and a loving family. And holidays, are meant to be spent with loved ones. At least for me. And I believe, for many of you all out there too.
So, if you have a holiday coming up or even the weekend which is just two days away, make it a point to spend it with the ones who truly love you.
Ya, you can go catch a movie. Or head window shopping. Just drive around. Hang out at home. Whatever pleases you - but make sure it is done with your loved ones. Please.
I've got lots to write, actually. There are so many things I want to write about - especially my health situations that I want to share with many of you, but I have this horrid habit of procrastination. And, the days have been a little busy, of lately too.

Pariyerum Perumal. The Sky is Blue.

"Besides being Dr B R Ambedkar's favourite colour, blue was also the colour of the flag of the party floated by Ambedkar Scheduled Castes Federation of India in 1942. Blue is also the colour of sky—a representation of non-discrimination, that under the sky everyone is believed to be equal..."

I watched recently, in aghast, Pariyerum Perumal. Of caste, creed and a community pushed aside for no valid reason. It gave me jitters. That old man. His cruelty - in the name of caste. The people. Their insensibility. Their so called pride. I am still, clueless, trying to justify all these. I read how caste is still prevalent in India. How this is not just a screenplay but the truth of the plight of the people. 

Being born and bred in Malaysia, caste is not much of an issue. But, when I entered uni, I remembered being asked what I was. 

Atta, my paternal grandmother hailed from Chidambaram. She told me their family was Mudaliars and was married into one, too. That word was plugged into some part of my brain. And, that is what I answered, every time I was asked what I was. Naivety. Or rather stupidity. 

Ask me now, and I will tell you what I am.

I am human. My blood is red, just as the rest of you. I am not in any known hierarchy, and I do not want to be. I am Hindu. I will always be one. I love my religion. I love my God. I believe in goodness and being kind. I believe in being respectful to my elders. And, when I bid farewell to this world, I hope to have lived a life filled with love.

I hope you watch this movie. You, my reader. It is a beautiful, heart wrenching one which ends on a rather positive note - one of the reasons I want to recommend this movie. It creates a social awareness of people discriminated for no apparent reason. It questions equality. It questions our existence, humanity and compassion. It questions, above all, about life.

I never understood the significance of the colour blue, until I watched Pariyerum Perumal. I googled to learn about it and I found stories of Dr Ambedkar. I found Tenma, the Casteless Musical Collection. I found Pa. Ranjith. I found so many good reads that altered my perceptions.

Caste is just a five lettered word created by humans who want to justify their wrongdoings. Do not fall in that trap. Do not let your caste blind you.

Be a good human. That's all. Be loving, kind and thoughtful in every situation.

Yes, it's me. Yes, I'm back. Yes, it's 2019 in Malaysia. And, yes, I've got the reader settings back to public.

To everyone who asked me why I went missing, well, I have only my laziness to blame. My utmost apologies. And my sincerest New Year wishes. Here's wishing you all lots of love and happiness for the next 365 days and also the days after.

Here's to a happier year ahead. Hope is glitter. It brightens the path. And, when hope says it WILL be a happier year, it sure WILL.

Tamil movies for your free days...

This is not my zealot's list. Some movies mentioned here are from my zealot list, though. Note : Some. Most are ones I have watched and recommend you to, on your free days.

Watched & recommended for 2017 & 2018 :-

• Adhe Kangal - Kalaiyarasan, Sshivada & Janani Iyer. It was a rather good crime thriller. On rainy, snuggled on your sofa, this could be a good pick. Also had some nice songs.
• Dora - The gorgeous Nayanthara in the lead. Humour & horror well done. 
• 8 Thottakal - MS Bhaskar Sir nailed it as the main character. A crime thriller with a good set of casts. Tamil thrillers are revolving. 
• Pa. Paandi - Power Pandi. One of the best I would say. Because it didn't need glamour and glitz to leave a mark. Truth is, I love these kind of movies. Feel goods ones that end with a tug of the heart. And the songs. I have them on loop on my playlist. Rajkiran & Revathy Maam outshone Dhanush & Madonna Sebastian. 
• Bahubali : The Conlusion - Rajamouli brings movies to an all together different level. I prefered the first but this was tremendously good as well. p/s :- we visited the Bahubali sets at Ramoji film City in Hyderabad in February 2018. 
• Oru Kidaiyin Karunai Manu - Dont let the rustic surrounding of the movie con you into not watching this gem. This is a stellar. Again, no glamour, no glitz. Armed with an astounding storyline and very talented casts, this is another must watch of the year. 
• Vikram Vedha - The Movie of 2017. Wins uncontested. Yes, I am a huge fan of the very charming Vijay Sethupathi. And the young as ever Madhavan. But the movie is above them. I watched at the theaters, skeptically. Some reviews were rather negative and cynical. But I am glad I went ahead because this, is one of our very best Tamil thrillers. 
• Taramani - Because Director Ram is an ace at what he does. Warning : The hero will annoy you to the maximum. But, that is not what good movies are about. The story line wins. Ram wanted to emphasize on the cons of social media and he did it rather well. Yuvan's music brings further grace to the movie.
• Velaiila Pattadhari 2 - The first one was superb. A mass. This was moderate. The floods in Chennai and the lessons we should learn from the catastrophe. 
• Thupparivaalan - Another one of my favourite directors. Mysskin. Another good crime thriller that you can safely enjoy.
• Solo - This is a Malayalam remake. It is a compilation of a few good stories. It has the dark feel so if you are not much of a fan, please skip. I truly liked the movie - nevertheless. 
• Meyaadha Maan - Vaibhav. Priya Bhavani Shankar. Acute romantic comedy with equally fun songs that you should give a try. 
• Theeran Adhigaram Ondru - Based on a true story, this action thriller dwells into the history of robbers in India. 
• Aruvi - Aditi Balan. An original social drama. Must watch. I guess I have reviewed 10 reasons to watch it in early 2018.
• Savarakathi - Mysskin & Ram. Poorna, the heroin, in her character, will drive you mad. She has the ability to nag continuously. But there is Ram, and there is Mysskin, and there is this beautiful story about a father's responsibility and love. And a very very beautiful song titled, Anaanthu Paar.
• Nadigaiyar Thilagam - A biography on the legendary Savithri Madam. I enjoyed Samantha & Vijay Devarakonda just as much as I did Keerthy Suresh & Dulquer Salman. 
• Kaala - Superstar's best. He shines like a diamond as Karikalan. The entire cast too. For me, it was Rajini Sir's best to date. He played someone his age. No frills, no foreign locales. And songs that melt your heart. Must watch even if you are not a Thalaivar fan. I am. Diehard. :)
• Lakshmi - Prabhu Deva and that very talented little Ditya Bhande. A dance musical that you can enjoy with your family.
• Merku Thodarchi Malai - A village based movie on the cardamon sellers and the struggles they endure. It is based on the heir plights. Solemn.
• U-Turn - Samantha Akkineni is drop dead gorgeous - as usual. A horror movie with a twist. And the message it delivers. 
• Pariyerum Perumal - Many people have referred it as the best of the year. The story dwells on caste and the continued importance we give them despite all the progress in the world. I want to write further about the movie, but I will definitely recommend it to everyone. Remember, our blood is all red.
• 96 - My movie. Vijay Sethupathi & Trisha. Loved it to the core and have watched it too many times, till date. Everything about the movie is REVOLUTIONARY ! :-)
• Nota - A political based movie with the cute Vijay Devarakonda, Naseer, MS Bhaskar, Satyaraj and a lot more. A good watch especially for NRI's like me. NOTA - None of the above, in election terms.
• Raatchasan - Crime thriller with a very eerie villain. Go watch. I do not want to spoil the excitement.

This is it. A short compilation for 2017 & 2018. Hope you agree. Hope you watch a couple of what I have recommended.

Thunbam Nergayil - The Gem

I woke up to the smell of freshly fried vada - the famous and all time favourite Indian savoury. And, what came next to mind was, of course, tadaaaaaaaaaaa - Chennai ! Allepey ! Hyderabad ! Kanyakumari ! India ! Where my soul continues to live !

It's been many months since I did my daily dwelling on my favourite country. I woke up every morning missing India, prior to May 9th. The very memorable May 9th 2018. When my Malaysia was swept by a gigantic political tsunami. The people of Malaysia, unitedly, with the leadership of our favourite former Prime Minister, Tun M, changed the ruling government of 60 years. Amazing isn't it ? How unity can create such huge wonders. How people power is not something minuscule. 

So, well, now... 7 months later, here I am, writing my blog, from what we the people of Malaysia call, Malaysia Baru. Simply translated, the New Malaysia. The new government is learning the trait. We do have lots of hick ups, but we believe in them and a better future for this beautiful country. Hello ! Rome wasn't built in a day ! And, we are led by our 4th Prime Minister, our greatest pride. The oldest Statesman in the world. The one who initially put our country on the world map, for all good reasons. 

You should have known by now, how much I look up to my Prime Minister. I do. He is well read. He is intelligent, bright and quick to respond - sensibly. He remains calm at all times. A hard worker. Diligent in pursuits. And not to mention, funny and super cute at times. 

There was a video, viral days after our huge win over the last ruling party. When our Tun M returned from the Royal Palace after taking oath as our 7th Prime Minister. I remember crying in awe over it. His official vehicle stops in a sea of people, all who rush to thank him for saving the country and asking him to take care of his health and well being. He is 93. 

Yes, he is 93. He has led the country for more than 20 years as our 4th Prime Minister. He has seen us through economical and political turmoil. He did his very best for this country and has been the brainchild of many of our greatest achievements. 

I'm smiling. I'm truly proud of him and thus my extra bragging. And, if you are a non Malaysian reading this, do visit my beautiful country any time soon. In advance, here's me welcoming you to our New Malaysia. 

7 months have passed by swiftly. 7 months in which my thoughts of India have reduced drastically. I did think of her. Not as often as before but I did. I still do. India, she's a beauty. And, you'll never fail to be amazed by diversity. 

Until this morning. When the smell of vada, fresh from the oven, filled the air. Vada is a staple breakfast there. You can get it piping hot first thing in the morning - in most parts of India. So, yes, in between all this writings, I'm also scrolling between pages on which part of India to visit next, real soon. 

I'm back, I guess. The crazy-about-India person that I am.

70. Tun Mahathir Mohamed and my Malaysia Baru - our 7th Prime a Minister who was also our 4th. He returned with a bang. He is 93 and his is an inspiration in capital letters. 

71. Sandals - the simple footwear. I like them with an Indian touch. Leather. Nothing overboard. Comfortable. 

72. Instagram - because I get to look at pictures. No fuss. Of sceneries. Different countries. Food. Fashion. People. Cropped clips of movies and songs. There's always something motivational to think about. 

Hey everyone, we are all just a month and so away from the very new year. So, here's a toast to wonderful days ahead.

Sweets

1. I'm not too fond of sweet stuff. There's an exception however. I can eat loads of them, when I'm back in India. Don't ask me the actual recent why. But I believe it has something to do with authenticity. Fresh milk, pure ghee and the Indian spices. And the end product is some mouth watering world renowned Indian sweet.

2. I've had 20 mini jelebis in one go - while in Jaipur. It was a street stall recommended by our driver. Yes, 20. And I wish I had had more.

3. I've also had like half a box of fruit Halwa from Adyar Ananda Bhawan Chennai. And, do so, very time I set foot in my favourite metropolitan Chennai.

4. And, the revered Tirupathi Ladoo. I eat both. NRI entrances comes with two ladoos per ticket. They are divine. Oval shaped but so immensely tasty.

5. During my recent vacation to Hyderabad, I fell crazily in love with another Indian sweet, synonym to the any wedding there. The Double Ki Metta. A sweet bread pudding with almond, pistachios, cashew nuts and raisins scattered on top.

6. Doubles Ki Metta must be accompanied by the Irani Chai - which is a drink made from tea. Originating from Iran, it's justified to the local buds and ya, tastes heavenly.

7. Today, I made them, here at home. Reminiscing the days I had in Hyderabad.
Found the simplest recipe on Pinterest and followed suit.

8. This is the outcome. We had it after lunch and it disappeared from the dining table very quickly. My family consumes very little sugar too, so I adjusted the sweetness. And had more nuts added into the recipe.

10 Resaons To Watch Aruvi

1. Aditi Balan. One of Tamil Nadu's greatest finds - without doubt and hesitation. She's a true actor. She left me awestruck. 
2. Originality. The story. Unheard in Tamil cinema. Bold. Brazen. Beautiful. 
3. Emily. The transgender. How she knocks sense into us. That love has no borders. Or shape. Or image. Or whatever. Love, is love. And it comes straight from the heart.
4. Dialogues. Aditi Balan, as Aruvi. The things she says. Even the long long dialogues are spoken in clarity. Her dialogues stand out, yes but so does everyone else's. The importance of each character in the movie is fair and justified. 
5. Songs. Not your common kind. They are what we Tamils would say, "Veraaa level..."
6. One of the two bests for 2017. The other, I'd say is Vikram Vedha. 
7. Back Groundscore Music - BGM. Precise. 
8. The momentum. I was laughing one minute. Giggling the other. And crying crazily, next. 
9. The appreciation of life. And how we are all actually manipulated by wealth and luxury and everything materialistic. It makes you sit up and wonder. The simpler things in life that we tend to overlook.
10. Because Aruvi is a MUST see !!!

Kodi - the Sirukki's must watch

Watched it at the theatres during my Deepavali holidays.

Verdict : I loved it. Despite the major emphasis being politics.

Dhanush. I'm a huge fan of him. One of those few who actually have good acting skills. The fascination begun with Aadukalam. And it is growing with every good one he continues to give. Think Mariyan.

In Kodi, Dhanush plays dual roles. As the serious political fanatic Kodi and the home buddy Anbu. He has done immense justice to both.

I'd choose Kodi any given time. Full beard. Serious. Driven. Ambitious. Loyal to the core. He was an epitome in his character. And, yes, adorably charming. He is. He is. He is.

Trisha. If you enjoy watching good Tamil movies - yup, please read that line again.
If you enjoy watching good Tamil movies (not the mass ones which have dancing around trees, big names, item numbers, exotic locations, massive stunts BUT no storyline ;) - then, you will understand that Trisha was an equally strong character in Kodi. As equal as Kodi himself, actually. And she brought total grace to her over ambitious Rudra.

Saranya Ponvannan. The perfect mother character. As always. She never goes wrong in her ability to showcase love in such candid ways. We can relate her to our Moms at home, so very easily.

Santhosh Narayanan. The modern music director. His flair for jazzy untraditional Indian music. The duet between Dhanush and Trisha titled Sirukki Vaasam stands at Number One for me.

Bhagat Singh. Kodi's best friend. Despite not having too big a role, he definitely leaves a mark.

Don't listen to what others have to say. Don't let them stop you watching from this good movie. It is. Do. If you enjoy reading my blog and the movies I suggest, then, yes, kindly watch. I did. I'm recommending to many.

Acham Enbathu Madamayada - Cool Watch

Acham Enbathu Madamayada

A one time watch but nevertheless a good one, with some illogical hiccups. But, we can close an eye to that. Because of the ones mentioned below :-

1. Cinematography - GVM is an ace at bringing out colors in his scenes. From Simbu's home to the roads they travel, everything is just so fresh and vibrant.
2. Manjima Mohan - Stunner. And a natural, at acting. No frill heroine to watch out for.
3. Songs - ARR. Magical. The most beautiful ones to me, come in sequence, in the movie. Raasali, Avalum Naanum and then Thali Pogathey.
4. GVM - Gautham Vasudev Menon. His storyline. His on and off appearance to make a mark in his movie. It's become routine now. But, why not ? Positive stamps are always good.
5. Daniel Balaji - After a long hiatus. But as bad as always. His villainy character always makes me tremble. In this, too.
6. The Royal Enfield - What A Bike ! I saw many on the streets and highways of India. It's a luxury there. GVM made it look more majestic in this movie.
7. The hero's name - Undisclosed until the end. I'm not saying anything more. You've got to watch it to know. Wink, wink.
8. Kanyakumari - Reminiscence. For me. The coastal town where sunrises are too beautiful to be explained. The couple watch one on their road tour. Overwhelming.
9. The Ending - We do get a summary on why things happened and how it has come to present day. Justified. As we were not left in a lurch.
10. STR - for not overdoing it, unlike in his other movies. GVM always tones down STR and brings out the best in him, alike VTV.

So, that's it. 10 reasonable points given to watch Acham Yenbathu Madamaiyada. It was not a box office hit, but a pleasant one, no doubt. Tamil audience are hard to predict and harder to please.

But, zealots will continue to recommend the good ones - box office or not.

Vijay Yesudass is a gem. Tamil at its utmost.

What-A-Movie.
If you have a weekend to laze at home with two hours or so, just to get comfy on the sofa with a cup of hot Nescafé and something to munch - this movie will be your best pick.

I loved it. I LOVED it. So much.

Vijay Sethupathi. The dark Greek God. He is plain awesome. One of our skilled actors, who broke through the industry a little late. But, he is here now. And he is definitely going to stay. For long.
In this one, he plays the not so notorious rowdy. He stumbles during fights. And loses his cool easily. But, he has the quirkiest dialogues you can ever imagine. The ones that make your eyes pop and you lips smile.

Madonna Sebastian. She is girl next door gorgeous. I've seen her on Kappa TV, singing but I was amazed by her acting skills. She is a natural. And, her dressing sense syncs a hundred percent with mine. The chemistry between her Yazhini and the hero Kathir, is magic.

Decency. Many Tamil movies lack this substance. Of lately. This one wins high time. No sexy songs. No read in between the dialogues. No unnecessary dialogues. The flow just goes and goes and by the time you realize it, baaammmm.., the movie ends.

The sky is the limit. The ending puts you in such a mood. I was in tears. I was smiling, too. What is life without gratitude. What is life if you forget the people who actually matter.

Songs. Awesome. Jazzy. No overseas backdrops. They run along with the movie plot. But so tastefully done.

A word of caution though. It is slow moving. Like a dark comedy. The mass will not be able to digest this kind of movies. But, zealots will.

If you read my blog regularly and the movies I suggest suit your taste, this will to. Nalan Kumarasamy is a Nallaya Iyakunar talent. This time to the silver screen.

Recommended Tamil Movies 2015 & 2016 - Zealot's List (with added features)

The movies that made me realize how mind blowing Tamil movies can still be.

For the year 2016. In no particular order, unless stated.

Undisputed : Kabali. Review can no one ever. That's how mass the Superstar is.

* Irudhi Sutru - Madhavan & Rithika Singh. An incredible attempt to emphasize the art of boxing. Excellent cinematography and amazing songs. A must see.
* Bangalore Naatkal - Arya, Bobby Simha & Sri Divya. One of those movies I have yet to get tired of. It's a wholesome entertainer. Adapted from the original Malayalam box office Bangalore Days, the Tamil one justifies equally.
* Sethupathi - Vijay Sethupathi & Remya Nambeesan. Yes, I'm a huge fan of Vijay Sethupathi. He is charming. It's a police movie but with a twist. Yes, watch. It's a good one.
* Kathalum Kadanthu Pogum - Vijay Sethupathi & Madonna Sebastian. Again. Vijay Sethupathi. He's the current heartthrob. I really love this movie. Despite it being a slow, dark comedy. Madonna Sebastian was out of the world in her character. It carries a beautiful message. Keep some tissue for the heartwarming ending.
* Vetrivel - Sasikumar & Miya George. Sasikumar continues to sacrifices in yet another saga. Smile please. Smirk, at least. I tried making a funny statement there. But, despite the redundancy of his character, the storyline nails the point. Miya George is a stunner, despite only being in the first half of the movie.
* Kodi - Dhanush & Trisha. One of my recent favorites. It was my watch-at-the-theaters-Deepavali-movie, and I truly enjoyed its entirety. Especially the political position crazy Trisha. Must watch 2016.
* Oru Naal Oru Koothu - Dinesh & a beautiful lanky newcomer. I watched this movie like three times on paid TV. A very good attempt about marriage and relationships. Life is full of twists and turns.
* Dharma Durai - Vijay Sethupathi & Tamanna. Yet again. 'The' Vijay Sethupathi as a heartbroken doctor from a feuding family and how he overcomes the obstacles in his life.

For the year 2015. In no particular order, unless stated.

* Bahubali, The Beginning - The movie. Mind blowing. SS Rajamouli is a diligent film maker. Remember the fly movie, 'E' ? He awes us all in this too. I have already reviewed about it in full. So, yes, please watch.
* Yennai Arinthal - The movie that made me an Ajith fan. He was impeccable in his role. A wholesome entertainer that would keep you on toes.
* Oh Kathal Kanmani - My favourite movie in recent times. I really need to review it. Real soon. I think everyone should watch it, despite the a-tad-too-modern-lifestyle-for-the-normal-Indian-family. One of the major reasons it didn't appeal to the typical Indian audience. But Maniratnam  Sir is a prodigy in film making. He was just conveying what is becoming norm.
* Kaaka Muttai - The award winning one. Liked it in all its simplicity. The other side of Singara Chennai showed as how it is basis. That small boy, Chinna Kaaka Muttai, he was just adorable. And, Aishwarya Rajesh - the Tamil beauty who plays the mom role wonderfully.
* Orange Mittai - For the umpteenth time, Vijay Sethupathi. If there is one movie that I think a zealot should watch, it is this. This is not for the mass. But, it was a real awesome one, about life and relationships. Many people told me it was boring. The truth is, you need skills and patience to watch good movies. This movie applies. But, give it a try. On a real free weekend, cozy up on your sofa and play this one. You'll smile, when it's over. If you are a true fellow zealot, that is.
* Thani Oruvan - I do not fancy Jeyam Ravi. But he was good in this. The star of the movie, was however, Arvindsamy. The dashing villain. Oh, and the Kathal Cricket song that I so enjoy.
* Naanum Rowdythaan - Watched in at the theaters. An awesome comedy. I was laughing in tears for a huge part of it. Vijay Sethupathi and Nayantara and a whole lot of talented stars.
* Purampoku Engira Podhuvudamai - Arya. Vijay Sethupathi. Shaam. Another good one that many didn't appreciate. I liked it, though.
* Kutram Kadithal - I read this won awards. Local and overseas too. It is about a teacher and her pupil. And an accident which sets of a huge impact on many. A good watch, nevertheless.
* Vedalam - I watched this only a few days ago. Ajith. And Lakshmi Menon. About siblings. An enjoyable one except for a few glitches which include Shruthi Haasan. Oops, sorry.

Yet to watch but recommended by fellow zealots. I shall review once done. Apologies in advance.

Vijay Sethupathi. Tall, dark, handsome. And funny. And, an awesome actor. Tamil Nadu's undisputed current gem. Yes, I am a huge fan of him. But Dhanush still wins. At least for me.

* Adiye Azhage from Oru Naal Oru Koothu

Appa's song. He sang me this classic many many times. It always brings a smile. Always. Originally sung by PB Srinivas, this Job Kurian cover is just as amazing.
