Speak your heart. I have. :)

March is here.
And March, to me, is about, shouting out (writing, in this case) what I really think.

So here comes, Shalu, sincerely.
And pre-pardons if they hurt the heart, even a tiny weeny bit.

1. If you love people, tell them. Life is short. Ego is a horrible trait. And, you don't know what tomorrow holds. Just telling someone they matter, can chill the coldest soul. I have. To my loved ones. You, do too.

2. I seriously don't think Jessica Jude, the runner up in Super Singer a Junior 4, was worth her title. Apologies. But I am being honest here. If you had watched the program from day one, you will understand. It is not that she is non deserving. Just not on par. With any of the other 5 finalist. This was a talent based show. At least, that's what I assumed it was - until the devastating finals. These children were fed with knowledge that their talent and hard work combined, was the ultimate recipe to success. But, what triumphed in the end, was votes (bought excessively by one majority). At least, the organizers could have had two categories - voters and jury's. That would have justified the entire scenario. p/s : I know it does not matter much, but I ceased being a fan of Vijay TV’s Super Singer, Junior, Senior, whatsoever. :( So, don't expect me to talk about it any more. And, refer No. 1 – Jessica Jude, I love you. I love you not. :)

3. We should plant more trees. And garden, more often. The weather here, is unbearably hot. And humid. Keeping ourselves hydrated has become an important duty. It always is. But, on a mammoth scale now. Malaysia feels like a desert at noon. So, have I been to a desert? Hmmm. Not really. Rajasthan, yes. I know there's a desert somewhere there, although I didn't, specifically. Well, it is sweating hot, even at midnight. Got my point?

4. Old people need extra care. Extra love. Extra care. Extra attention. Extra conversation times. Extra everything. Kindly understand that. We too, will age, eventually. Put yourself in their shoes before blowing your heads off. We are extinct without them. UNDERSTAND? So, drop your smart mobiles and equipment, while they are around. Talk to them, instead. They love conversations. Try it. See for yourself. Unless they too are social media platform enthusiasts. Even, then, you can. Just send them a cute message. I love you. Thanks for being a part of my life. I am blessed to you have you. Yup. See them smile. See their eyes light up. After all, we've come as far as free messaging. Whatsapp is a blessing. Use it with them, too. Not just your young rocking hip friends.

5. If you love people, tell them. Life is short. Ego is a horrible trait. And, you don't know what tomorrow holds. Just telling someone they matter, can chill the coldest soul. I have. To my loved ones. You, do too…………………………… Yes, this is actually No. 1. Why not? We tell important things twice, don't we. All. I do, too. So, yes. Love is beautiful. It warms hearts. Fuzzes the soul. Blooms a smile. Invokes happiness. So, what are you waiting for? Grab that phone (better, the person ;) and tell them. So easy. As ABC. Tell them they matter. Tell them they are genuinely loved. Tell them that you are blessed for their presence in your life. Tell them thanks for being in your life. Tell them, just in simple words – Love you. Can?

So, yup. That's it. Some mildly harsh stuff I wish to tell people.

Have a marvelous March. It's going to move real fast, just like January and February. So, make the best of it.

Till then, this is Shalu, signing off, with love.

Take care. God bless.

12 Date Ideas ~ my Tamil girl version

Early Valentine wishes. :)

2015 is the year of dates. Dates, dates and more dates. At least for me. It was one of my resolutions.

2014 was a little lame. Scarce and sporadic. Yes, it was. Just writing it, emphasises the pathetic tone.

So, this year, I want to date more. To enjoy those beautiful moments. To make time for the sweet nothings.

And, I intend to abide by them.

And, what better time to start, than February, the month of love?

12 Date Ideas - I want to have with him.

1. The Temple Visit
My ultimate date, would be definitely this. An early morning visit to the temple. The tranquility and serenity of this place of worship. The peacefulness it brings the heart, is just speech defying. Just him & me. In the presence of the Almighty. Amidst the chime of temple bells, the chant of sacred verses and the aroma of jasmines, roses, sandalwood and incense. And, a stop over for breakfast. Think idli and Madras coffee.

2. The Sunrise Watch
Yes. The Lets Watch The Sunrise Together Date. The one that begins with a phone call. Where he candidly asks if I would want to see it with him. And, where, I would happily say yes. You know, the well spent one, where you talk stuff, hold hands, embrace the silence and enjoy the dancing of waves, as the sun rises, embodying a new beginning. And a simple Western breakfast, there after.

3. The Joggers Park
Oh, yes. The Joggers Park. Oh, and this is not only confined to health freaks or the wannabes. Huge trees. Sweet breeze. Ample shade. Wooden benches. Morning dew. The smell of earth, and grass, entwined. Relationships grow over simple stuff like this, not material ones. Oh, and this is not only confined to health freaks or the wannabes. Stroll along. Jog. Brisk walk. Whatever. Spend time together. That's all that counts.

4. The Coffee Cafe
The coffee cafe date. Something I will never say no too - even on my busiest days. I love coffee. I love tea, too. And, I love quaint restaurants which serve them. Ambience is such a turn on. Just sitting with your greatest crush, sipping a hot drink and exchanging sweet nothings - is downright lovely. Malaysia, every nook and corner, has an endless list of superb cafes and hangouts. It's a matter of starting - somewhere.

5. The Scooter/Bicycle Ride
The thought of the date itself puts a huge grin on my face. Him & me. A scooter. Or a simple bicycle. So honestly romantic. The ability to hug him from the back. To fiddle with his hair and ears. To scream in ecstasy, as you ride downhill. There's a certain kind of happiness when he leads. And, you know, you are in safe hands.

6. The Movie Date
Yup. A good movie, that is. And, Tamil, preferably. A cup of chilled drink. Two straws. And, a strong hand grip at every time a beautiful moment comes. If I could turn back time and choose 3 Tamil movies that for a date, Alaipayuthey would always be Número Uno. Number One. Then, the recent Panayarum Padminiyum. A stellar. And last but not least, any Ajith movie. For him. Think Don.

7. The Beach Picnic
I am an aquaholic. Read that right. Please. Aquaholic. A person who loves water. Any place associated with water. Especially the beach. Mention beach, and I am hyper. I am somewhat lucky. Penang is an island. And, beaches are a plenty. Picnics should be somewhat early morning. Or late evening, when the sun is down. Some chocolate drink, fresh juice, sandwiches, chips, a picnic mat, and voila, you are set.

8. The Count the Stars Match
How beautiful a thought. Not to mention, jaw dropping romantic. On a bright cloudless night, however. But, insect repellants would be very handy. You don't want to spend the night shooing away mosquitoes instead, do you? And, at the end of the day, the magic lies in making the best, out of trivial moments like this.

9. The Kitchen Party
Cooking together. Yes. What more couples should do - more often. Bonding is a necessity in any relationship. And, what better way than preparing a meal together. I think it's a sweet idea. Deciding on a simple but lovely menu. Going to the grocers. Buying the stuff. And returning home to start the entrée. Not to mention, setting up a romantic atmosphere, Illayaraja's music playing softly in the background, and all.

10. The Family / Friend Hangout
I grew up to the notion that love begins with family. Still do. Always will. A guy who ensures you are a part of his family and friends, is ALWAYS a keeper. Make the best of those outings. Be pleasant to everyone in his circle. And, be genuine. Put the effort to be a part of it. Establish a connection with his clique. He wanted you in, so make him proud.

11. The Rain Dance
No. Not the non virtuous one as in Bolly or Molly movies. I am referring to the ones that happen at the brink of the moment. When it's starting to rain a little heavier, you are both out in the rain, he catches hold of your umbrella and throws it away. And, you just embrace the joy of getting drenched in the rain with someone you genuinely adore. Love is about the small things.

12. The Pet Shop Trip
I love animals. Especially dogs. And birds. I have actually done this one, albeit it being a non date kind of thing. More of a stop over. He wanted to get food for his fish, an Arowana. But, I enjoyed those little moments. Both of us drooling over the animals in the pet shop. The rabbits. The hamsters. The birds. The fishes. Why not? Especially if both love animals.

Note : iPads are least Blogger friendly. And I am not too Internet savvy. I want to make that clear. So, I am currently not able to post a song. Pardon me. But, given a choice it would be, at this very moment - "Haiyayo Nenju Alayathudi...." from my favourite Aadukalam.

Till I see you all again, this is a signed off with lots of love,
Shalu.R.

Ps ~ oh, please wish me luck. Will need them, lots. ;)

Kannamaa, is what my father called me. The Jigarthanda song.

Greetings.

It's drizzling over here. Not warm neither cold, but definitely better than dry and humid.
I have been down with the fever, flu and sore throat for the past one week and more.
Visited the doctor, thrice. Yes, thrice. The last, being yesterday night.
My temperature was at 39.5 to 40 degrees Celsius high, so the doctor gave me 2 injections.
One for the fever and the other for the throat infection.
I am half recovered now. The is a slight running nose and a lesser than mild cough, but way better than what I was the whole of last week.
And, for the first time in days, I slept well.
I miss Appa, especially at moments like these. Amma is a wonderful caretaker, nevertheless. All 100%. She made me rice porridge. She poached eggs. She made Chinese noodles. And bought me, fresh coconut water. I am being pampered to the max. But, I miss Appa, despite all.....

Kannamaa, is how Appa called, me. I still raise eyes if someone does so, out of the blue.
It's equalent to being called the Queen. The exact way Appa doted upon me. Like a Queen. I have no doubt that even Amma and Akka were second to me. I was, definitely, the only apple of his eye. And, that is the plain truth.....

I enjoy this song. It's a little eccentric, though. I was suppose to watch the movie at the theatres recently, but had to make way for something else. Everyone is raving about it. And, I am a big fan of Naalaya Iyakunar contestants. Karthik Subburaj, the director is one. And there is also the young talents comprising of Siddarth, Lakshmi Menon and Bobby Simha. People who ACTUALLY act, not flaunt. So, more reasons to watch this movie.....

Signing of, now.
Take care. God bless.
Sleepy..... Thanks to all the medication.

p/s :- using an iPad to blog is like using a GPS tracker in the Sahara Desert. Or perhaps I am not too Internet savvy especially with iOS devices.

10 reasons (and more) why EVERYONE should watch Pannaiyarum Padminiyum.

I am definite about this movie. Shalu's choice - undoubtedly.
That everyone should watch it.
A great movie inspired by a 10 minute short film from Naalaya Iyakunar.
If there is one film for 2014 which blew my mind, made me sit up and smile and awe over the evolving Tamil film industry, this was it.
Watch it. All of it. Don't miss even a second. It is way too beautiful to miss.
A decent movie that evokes the sentiments. Of love, family and relationships. Be it with human or inanimate objects.
What-A-Movie.
I am certain this movie is headed for a string of awards and accolades.
10 reasons why EVERYONE must watch this stellar.
  1. Jayaprakash, the Pannaiyar.  The a Number One reason. He is brilliant in his role. The main reason why I have watched this movie, all 152 minutes, three times. And each time, unfazed and with the same level of content. As the village Pannaiyar, as the loving husband, as the devoted father. In every scene, he scores a perfect 10. His expressions, flawless. His acting ability, astounding. I am an ardent fan of his. Ardent, yes.
  2. Thulasi, Chellama, the Pannaiyar's wife. Gawd, she does her role in equal to the brilliance of the Pannaiyar. She is a natural. The wife who stands by her husband. Filial. Encouraging. Flirty. Their chemistry is perfect. So perfect, that I felt they fared far better than the younger couple.
  3. Vijay Sethupathi as the Driver Murugesan. One of my favourite actors ranks third, in this movie. The elderly couple were too good. But, Vijay Sethupathi plays his part very well. As he always does. He is indeed a versatile actor. He shines as the Pannaiyar's driver. He radiates as the son like figure to the Pannaiyar's wife. And, the down to earth lover to the heroine.
  4. Padmini, the car.  This awesome premier vehicle, is green in colour, large, strong and holds a major capacity in the movie. It is the village's stately symbol. And half the title of the movie.
  5. The beautiful songs. All of them. Justin Prabhakaran, the movie music director should be applauded for an all line up of heart melting numbers. Vaali has penned the lyrics for three of the songs. My favourite is Onnakaaga Poranthene as well as Ennakaaga Poranthaaye. Back to back male and female versions. Love, described in such magnificence.
  6. Peedai @ Peruchaali.  The guy's actual name is Balasaravanan. He adds laughter to the already candid moments. He has a special ability. What? Well, watch it. You will know. It's indeed so very hilarious.
  7. Neelima Rani, the daughter. The villain of the movie. You will despise her. Daughters always  prioritise their parents even after marriage. This is fact. But, not in her case. She is constantly trying to loot something from her parental home. And, she plays her part so well, you will frown disapprovingly every time she visits her parents.
  8. Original screenplay by S U Arunkumar.  What a screenplay. He is the brainchild to this awesome movie. He hails from the Naalaya Iyakunar league. So, it's not surprising at all. He has all the makings to be a celebrated young director. Hats off.
  9. Gokul Benoy's cinematography. I have always been a huge fan of cinematography. Like Rajiv Menon. Mark Koninckx. Manoj Paramahamsa. Benoy has done great justice to the entire movie. Crisp, clear and overwhelming shots. I watched it on HD and DVD. Original. They did not play at a cinema near home. Had they, I would have, watched it there. Three times, undoubtedly. Just like am doing now.
  10. The string of awards. That it is going to win. Watch it before it is going to be the talk of the town. It is, already now. But do so, before the juries from acclaimed bodies, get together and decide so. Then, when they give away the awards, you will smile, knowing you have watched an awesome screenplay, prior to its merit bestowal.
When you finish watching this movie, that feel good motor response is going to enfold you. Trust me.

Have a blessed week. July is just days away. Yes I have been a horrible, lazy blogger - sincere apologies. :-)

Take care. God Bless.

Inidhu, Inidhu. Yes, I am back. :-) Life is too short to be busy. Make the best of it !!

ps/ - i LOVE this video. Dont leave without watching it - FULL. This is something you must not miss. Life is too short to be proud of being busy. Savour life. Every second of it. Inidhu, Inidhu - that is how life should be. :-)

Hiatus - A break or interruption in the continuity of a work, series, action, etc.
In my case, blogging. :-(

I am truly sorry for not being able to leave a post during the last two months.

No. I am not going to say I was busy.
I hate glorying the word busy.
Busy is a word that is meant for people who do not have lives.
I sometimes wonder about all those people who constantly claim (or rather allege and declare) themselves so.

What when they grow old ?
What when they become inactive ?
When all that busyness comes to a halt ?
When being idle is their only available choice ?
Will karma knock at their doors?
Will karma say, "Well, guess what ? You spent your whole life lauding and celebrating the action of being busy. All those people who were there, tirelessly and patiently waiting for you, hoping that somehow, you'd set aside some time for them, have ACTUALLY moved on. Well, now it's your time to listen to them say, "We are not BUSY - but rather, ENJOYING time - with family and friends who were there for us - all these while."

And, yes.
That's what I have been doing.
Spending LARGE amounts of time with family and friends.
Luxuriating in relationships that matter.

  • I have attended reunions.
  • I went for family functions. Lots.
  • I have stayed over the weekend at my sister's place. (Which I have not done in years).
  • I watched movies at the theatres, instead of at home.
  • I enrolled for yoga classes with gym facilities.
  • I head to Kuala Lumpur, the capital of Malaysia, more frequently, to visit my favourite relatives as well as my best friends.
  • I spend many free evenings with Amma at the kitchen.
  • I have gone window shopping in later afternoons and temple visiting in the late evenings, both on the same days, with Akka - my best buddy.
  • I enjoy biscuits over tea time - with family.
  • I read. A lot.
  • I am researching for my next vacation - already.
  • I meditate every other day. For 20 minutes, at least. It is indeed, very calming.
  • I joined a friend to the art gallery some time back. It was beautiful. Art is beautiful.
  • I want to swing by Singapore real soon. The Universal Studios and the Underwater World is simply irresistible. Planning has already started. :-)
  • I STILL have a hundred things running on my mind and hope to do as much as I can.
So, yes, this is Shalu - signing in again. After the hiatus. :-)
To everyone who has left me emails, iMessages, Facebook messages and comments, thank you from the very depth of my heart.
It is honorably wonderful to be appreciated. Thanks, yet again.

I spent the weekend at home. All 48 hours. Loved it. It has been a while since I had the immunity of doing so. Home remains my favourite sanctuary. I also love the beach, laid back coffee cafes and of course, Chennai and now, Varanasi, too.

I watched this movie this afternoon, with Amma. My sister and her kids joined us half way through the movie. They were paying the mandatory weekend visit. I was not paying full attention to it as I have watched it a couple of times prior to this. I was browsing through something on the ipad, actually.

And this song played. And I looked up. And totally doted it.
This is beautiful. Really.
Immerse your self in the song. The lyrics and the melody. Absorb the conversations in between.

Take care. God Bless.

Love always,
~Shalu~

DATE AN INDIAN GIRL WHO TRAVELS !!!!

Today's post is an inspiration from this page.
http://stephabroad.com/date-girl-travels/
A friend had posted this on my Facebook news feed. It was such an eye opener, in retrospect to the one against, trending on Huffington Post.
The last three days were hectic, in a joyful manner. Three days of pure rest and relaxation with close friends and family. The nation is celebrating the Chinese Lunar New Year.
Yes, it's back to work tomorrow. But, there is a consolation, after all. My vacation is just weeks away. And, yes, I am super, super excited.

So, here we go :-
Date the Indian girl who travels. Why ?

  • She, too, has a twinkle in her eyes. Yes, she does. She is constantly dreaming and devising her next vacation. Her imagination is larger than life.
  • She cares less about money. Yes. It is about those quaint roads, the local joints, the street food, the beaches, the lakes, the gardens, the mountains. Everything that does not require your credit card. She is simple and is content that way.
  • She IS homely. Believe me. She carries her home in her heart. And makes her visiting town or city, her second one. She fits well, anywhere. And, she enjoys being a local, for the moment. She loves the serenity of the temple. And, the peacefulness of the sea side.
  • She is hardworking. She is thrifty. Because she knows, she has to save money for her much anticipated travels - all through the year. And, yes - a well traveled labour is better equiped mentally and physically.
  • She is full of surprises. She is. She is. She is. And, she loves to be surprised, as well. She makes the best of smallest of marvels. She is an ace at finding places. She is happy just looking at things. From colonial buildings to ancient architecture.
  • She is all round and versatile. She is willing if you have a great plan. She is ready to pack her bags on a Friday evening and hitch the last bus to her favourite beach town. She is ready to hop on the scooter and ride uphill to view the city skyline at night. She is ready to spend her weekend at the rural village. She is game for anything pleasant.
  • She is awesome at conversations. Believe me. She is honest. She speaks her heart. She is well read. She is heartily traveled. She has a hundred stories to share. She will know when to cheer you up. She will know when to hold your hand and enjoy the silence. She will always be there for you. Because, she knows how beautiful, "Welcome" sounds and how poignant, "Goodbyes" are.
  • She is independent and strong. She loves her individuality. She loves her strength. She enjoys her privacy BUT loves your company.
So YES,

  • NEXT TIME, JOIN HER. TRAVEL DEFINITELY BONDS YOU TO HER.

Signing off - with a pat on my heart. Yes, I am vacationing soon.
I love to travel. And, I will be doing exactly, that.
If you are already travelling or plan to, in the near future - Happy Travelling.
If you are yet to - plan something. Anything. A weekday drive to the museum. A weekend trip to the little town in the next state.
Anything that needs you to, travel HAPPILY.

Go have a great week.
Smile over everything. God is watching. Everything will be fine, with passing time. Just keep faith. Just heartily pray.
See you around.
Till then - take care & God Bless.

Love always,
~Shalu~

p/s- this is an English number. I am breaking norm. I love the song. Such an eccentric voice.

The quintessential "in love" scenario ~ Me, Myself & I. Penjakaa Mazhai from Kangaroo.

Case Study : Me, Shalu.
Case Characterization : A typical Indian at heart. An ethnic Chennaite, in soul.
Offbeat Note : Born and bred in Malaysia. My soul, resides in Tamil Nadu, though. In all 130,058 km² of it.
Proclamation : This post is all about me, and no one else. It concerns MY manner of behavior, when struck by Cupid's arrow. It is not intended to offend, anyone, at any point.

♥1 I wear a LOT of Indian traditional attire.

Churidhars Suits, Kurtis and Sarees.
REALLY. I cannot explain the logic, but this is how it is for me.
Cotton churidhar suits and kurtis with jeans, being my favourite - on dates.
With anklets and bangles and jhumkas.
And, one of my many Indian Jolna bags, in hand.
I associate it with comfort.
I feel complacent. I feel at home.
Nothing glitzy. Nothing gaudy.
Something pleasant and makes me feel a million.

♥2 I have no fringe. I have a side parting hairstyle. I have a red pottu and the thiruneer, on my forehead.

Another of of my "love" theories.
If you see me in an attire as described in ♥1♥ combined with ♥2♥, then you can be like 95% sure, it is him, beside me.
If you see me, alone - then, it is the presence and aura, he has left behind and the fact that I am happily, reeling from it.
My hair is neatly pinned or pulled to the back of my ears, with a drop of hair oil.
A red pottu. Any given time. A pledge to him.
The thiruneer. The holy ash.
The reminder of the presence of God.
The enhancement of the next door girl persona.
Unassuming.

♥3♥ I become genuinely concerned. The "motherly" effect.

It is a sincere and genuine feeling.
I am constantly asking him to take care, of himself.
I am advising him to be safe on the road.
I am worried about his health.
I am a little anxious about the amount he spends working.
I steadily pray for him and his well being.
I keep him, in my heart, my thought and my soul - at all times.
With him, I am governed by this "motherly" qualities.

♥4♥ I wait. Patiently.

For everything.
His phone calls.
His sms'.
His Facebook messages.
His e-mails. (he has yet to send me "ANY" :-), but I am smiling anyway)
Our short meetings.
Our dates.
Our outings.
Anything, from him.
It's a wonder how I have become so tolerant and accepting.
It's a surprise how I do not make it an issue.
He dignifies me.
Yes, he does.

♥5♥ I tend to talk a lot. Gracious and mannerly.

Yes, I do.
Talk more than usual.
Not just with people close and around me.
But, to pets and plants, as well.
To, Dodo, the Labrador Retriever mix breed.
To, Michael, the puppy.
To Jerry, the Arowana fish.
To the Tulsi plant, in Amma's garden.
To my potted palm leaves and ferns.
To the blooming roses and jasmines.
To the stars, the skies and the seas.
To myself.
And, I sing and hum, too - lots of Illayaraja's.
And, I pay huge attention to its lyrics.

♥6♥ I constantly steal glances of him.

Lots.
I like to look at him.
In person.
In photos.
Be it a brief gaze. Or a long stare.
When he is not looking - innumerable times.
When caught - I blush nervously and bloom with a smile.
When we are in a sea of crowd.
When it's just the both of us.
The want to look at him is huge but never sufficient.
And, when I catch him, looking at me - my heart races and sprints and somersaults.

Yes. This is how I am, when in love. Things I have discovered.....
So, when you see me with all these traits - ehem, ehem, you know, huh ?

This is a "semma" song.....
The quintessential "in love" song, for now.....
The AWESOME lyrics are by the great Padma Bushan Vairamuthu.....
Introduced to it during my favourite TV show, Super Singer 4 on Vijay TV.

Stay blessed.

Thiruttu Paya Pulla from Thagararu - The-Oh-So-Cute-Song !!!!!

Welcoming the morning with a smile..... and this song playing to start the day.....
What a cute song !!!!! I laugh, just listening to it.....
Karthik, nails the feelings, perfectly.....
Sad, that they do not have, a girl singing the same.....

Stop the hype over Valentine's Day.
I have friends who are already planning, this and that.
Pardon me, I am not envious because I have vague idea for the moment.
The celebration does not entice me.
Roses sell as expensive as flight tickets to Ibiza.
Everything at the gift shop, sky rockets.
Even, the lunch and dinner for two, scale as high as the Burj Al Arab.
I am not saying it is wrong to splurge. But, it need not be that way.
The choice, is however, yours.

Love is MORE about the small things..... These are the things that you will remember many years later.....
Love is :-

@ the unexpected wake up call, first thing in the morning

@ the late night SMS, way past my bed time, which sees me struggling to find my mobile, reading it, and falling back to sleep with a smirk on my face

@ the box of regular Cadbury chocolates from the 7-Eleven kiosk, when least expected

@ the, 'Miaow, miaow' Varathapadatha Valibar Sangam style teaser

@ the loving anger when I do not answer the calls and do not find time to return. The "cold room" effect. :-P

@ the wink, the cheesy smile - despite being in a sea of crowd

@ the hug from behind

@ the phone call he makes in between his busy day

@ the meeting his friends for the first time, and they all seem to know me

@ the forehead kiss

@ the 'I miss you' for no apparent reason

@ the unexpected FB message

@ the umbrella walk during rain

@ the ride uphill to catch the night skyline

@ the surprise 'shall we go for coffee?'

@ the hand hold, while crossing the road

@ the movies, together

@ the sharing of a cup of coffee and a plate of dosa
and,

@ the 100 things that involve the thought.....

That's all folks.
Enjoy the festive season, and the upcoming Malaysian holidays.

Stay blessed. Take care.

Happy New Year 2014 ~ My Happy Song !!

Happy New Year Everyone !!!!!

I just welcomed another batch of 365 days. So have you. My prayers that the new year will be happy, prosperous, blessed and far better ~ than the last ~ for all of us. Optimism is simply the best form of reassurance.

I do not make resolutions. I prefer to go with the flow. I have hopes and aspirations, though. That's what I have been doing all these years. And, the same, this 2014.

I, continue, to be thankful to the Almighty for everything. Divine blessings. A great, supportive family. A cluster of caring and crazy friends. A life, that is on track, as wished.

I must say, the last few months have been moderately taxing.

  • Quote No. 1 -  Topic : Driving
  • "Anyone driving slower than you is an idiot, and anyone going faster than you is a maniac.." ~Author Unknown~
I have been driving on a daily basis. Exhausting, especially on days when the jam is just irrational.  I am glad those days are over. The public transportation is a boon. There are, of course, the stumbling blocks but I am thankful, anyhow.

  • Quote No. 2 - Topic : Holiday
  • "Vacation used to be a luxury, but in today's world it has become a necessity.."  ~Author Unknown~
I was and, am still, constantly researching. Due diligence, on a lighter note. Baffled ? Well, I am researching extensively for my vacation, which comes in the next 50 days or so. I have become an avid reader of National Geographic, Conde Nast Traveller, Lonely Planet  and travel blogs that give great tips and recommendations. The web is such a wonder. I cannot imagine not having access to it. Can you ?

  • Quote No. 3 - Topic : A Semi Broken Heart
  • "When love is lost, do not bow your head in sadness; instead keep your head up high and gaze into heaven for that is where your broken heart has been sent to heal.."  ~Author Unknown~
I got my heart nominally broken during the last days of July 2013. Nothing massive - but many things changed after that. Thank God for the frantic work load, the drive-to-work frenzy and the unsettled weekends, I raced through it with good grace. I managed to seal the feelings during the last ten days of December. I am a breath of fresh air, right now.

  • Quote No. 4 - Topic : Relationships
  • "People change and forget to tell each other.."  ~Lillian Hellman~

I learned that relationships are fragile and need our sincere effort to blossom. I have been an awful enthusiast. I received a mail from my best friend, a few weeks back. A long heart to heart one. She lamented how I rarely write, sms or return her calls - like old times. She wrote about the times we spent unwinding by the beach, the visits to our favourite hangout, The Tropical Spice Garden and our shopping and coffee times, during the weekends. It brought me to senses. Practically. How we neglect people, in the name of time. I miss those times, too. But, there is an issue.... She is in Australia. I am here. The only sensible thing we can do is chat online. And, that is, a little lame, to me. I have promised her though.....

  • Quote No. 5 - Topic : Keeping in touch, Making it work !!
  • "I still find each day too short for all the thoughts I want to think, all the walks I want to take, all the books I want to read and all the friends I want to see.."~John Burroughs~

I promise that I will reply mails, soonest possible and return phone calls, if missed. Not just to her. To everyone. It will save a lot of flak. In fact, starting this New Year, my mobile and my iPad are two gadgets that I carry along, faithfully. So, yes. Leave me a mail, and I shall reply within a day or two. Call me, and I shall answer. In case, I do not - kindly leave me a voice mail or an sms, and I will get back to you the moment I can. Deal ?

  • Quote No. 6 - Topic : Blogging
  • "Fill your paper with the breathings of your heart.." ~William Wordsworth~

I will TRY my level best, to blog, more often. I have wi-fi access throughout my home, and a handy iPad, to do assist. Last year's number of posts was a little humiliating, taking into account that it was such a great, lovable, memorable year.

  • Quote No. 7 - Illayaraja, the Great
  • "Music is an outburst of the soul.."~Frederick Delius~

I STILL love Illayaraja and his magical music despite him not being there for the concert. The King of Kings Concert was a collossal success. Every song sung during the near to 4 hour gig, was outstanding. I am glad I attended it with the rest of the near 17,000 crowd.

  • Quote No. 8 - Plans and Ideas
  • "Ideas can be life-changing. Sometimes all you need to open the door is just one more good idea.."  ~Jim Rohn~
I want to have more vacations and weekend getaways, this 2014. Great holidays ideas. Why not ? All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy, and Shalu a daffy lady. Plans. I want to enjoy my weekends more. I want to have coffee on weekdays, after work. I want to watch more movies, at the theaters. Pre-plans. I have a girlfriends get together to Langkawi Island in April. A 5 day shopping spree to Chennai in July. And, a year end hangout in Singapore. Fingers are crossed. Positivism is shooting high.....

  • Quote No. 9 - My Father, my everything :-)
  • "Dad, your guiding hand on my shoulder will remain with me forever.."  ~Author Unknown~

I continue to miss my father. His presence, in real. His presence, in spirit and soul, continues to grow with me - every day of my life. Yes, my bedside photo frame STILL has Appa and me. I love him beyond words. I am what I am today because of him.

That's all folks. For now.

Vaikunda Ekadasi comes this Saturday, the 11th of January 2014. Make your wish. Say your prayer. Light HIM a lamp. They will come true. Believe.....

God Bless.....

p/s - The song I listen to with a silly smile..... My happy song..... :-)

An Apple A Day !!!

Shalu is smiling - silly.
Yes. My birthday, which comes in the mid of November, is about 20 something days away - but I already have my first gift. Thus, the big cheesy smile.
It's an Apple iPad Mini. And - I am just deliriously happy.
I am a beginner. An Apple amateur. It's such a joy discovering the innumerable free apps that comes with this device. I am probing and prying - enthusiastically.
I already own a Fujitsu Laptop, an Acer Netbook and a Lenovo Ipad - but this, gives internet a whole new meaning. Really. I am not exaggerating. You will understand the feeling, when you own an Apple.
So - a toast to more blogging. Fingers crossed.
Deepavali is about a week plus plus away. Lets keep our hearts and lives - lighted, too.
Take care. God Bless.
p/s - No song for today. Bragging rights, only. LOL.

Aha Mazhaiyum Illai (Reprise) from Manadhil Maayam Seidhai

It is 12.4oam - here. Way, way pass my usual bedtime. Returned from the temple less than an hour ago. It was such an awesome feeling. Temple visits always amplify my faith. Love is abundant, there.
Vijayadasami just bid goodbye. Today is Ekadasi. I am STILL vegetarian. Until the 17th October - the last day of Puratasi. The 30 days - is about to end. The month dedicated to Lord Vengadasalabathi. The One , I so revere.
And, on the 18th, I have a BIG lunch date - a non-vege one - with a girlfriend. We planned this a month before, so I am truly looking forward to it.
Great friends. They make the dullest day - shine !! She is from that category.
Attached - today, in pictures. Captions attached.

I am going to bed. This song is playing softly. It is on replay. Something that I listen to quite regularly. I love the modern carnatic feel as well as the lovely lyrics. Semmaaaaaaaa.......
Good night. God Bless.
p/s - I am off to bed with a BIG smile. It was a WONDERFUL day !!

My Pick - 11 Good Tamil Movies (2013) and the mindblowing Aasai Mugam by Anil Srinivasan & Sikkil Gurucharan

I am back - after the tiny interval. Please pardon me. No - not 'pardon me' Arya style in Boss Engira Baskaran. You see - days have been somewhat and to some extent, busy. There were days that I could have written a word or two. Unfortunately on those days - laziness got the better part me. Yes, there is, indeed, a small tinge of disappointment, in me due to the fact that I did not write for the whole of September 2013. It was an occupied and enjoyable month.
October promises me the same. With Deepavali less than a month away - I have my hands full. Housekeeping, baking cookies and cakes, buying odds and ends, a Gala Dinner in KL city (two weeks from now), Navarathiri celebrations, the closure of Puratasi month and me being vegan (it was terribly hard this year around as I had so many lunch and dinner appointments), corresponding with my travel agents on tickets and itinerary for my soon to come vacation as well as other credible agendas that are not coming to mind, now.
By the way, it is raining heavily outside. I can smell the freshness of soil seeping into my room. "Aasai Mugam" by Anil Srinivasan and Sikkil Gurucharan is playing in the background. What-A-Feeling !!! All I need is a cup of milk tea, and big bean bag in my balcony !!!!
I have watched plenty of Tamil movies lately. Yes - despite the busy days. As mentioned below BUT not in ranking. Give me until year end, for that.

  1. Kadal by Mani Ratnam - Loved it to the core. It was one of the year's best movies.
  2. Haridas by G. N. R. Kumaravelan - Another great movie. It is unfair how commendable ones like this go without applauds.
  3. Vaatikuchi by Kinslin - So, so movie. Anjali steals the show. So will the outlandish ending.
  4. Chennaiyil Oru Naal by Shaheed Kader - I was glued to my TV the entire duration. This is a Malayalam remake. Loved it.
  5. Gauravam by Radha Mohan - With a majority of debutantes and good storyline, this is surely recommended.
  6. Soodhu Kavvum by Nalan Kumarasamy - One of the new generation directors in Tamil Nadu. He is a Naalaya Iyakunar find, and thus, his ability to deliver a great comedy minus the big names in humour. This carries the 'black comedy' feel just like Nadula Konjum Pakatha Kaanum. Yes - I laughed my heart out.
  7. Neram by Alphonse Putharen - My favourite comedy for the year. Bobby Simha, Nassar, John Vijay, Thambi Ramaiah, Manobala - this was side spliting hilarious. So, so loved the ending. What an idea, what a twist !!! Go watch on a day you want to plaster a big smile on your face.
  8. Kutti Puli by Muthaiah - Sasikumar is an actor. There is no doubt about it. So is Lakshmi Menon. They are both good examples to show that glamour is unnecessary for a strong screenplay. I liked it despite its rustic background.
  9. Maryan by Bharat Bala - Yes. My favourite hero. My favourite movie. And, my favourite song - Innum Konjum Neram. All against the backdrop of the sea - my favourite hangout. I watched this twice at the cinema. Dhanush deserves an award. From the first time you see him in the khaki uniform exchanging sweet nothings over the phone to his girlfriend to the drained and run down escapee - the transformation is just irrefutable.
  10. Thanga Meengal by Ram - I am all for father-daughter movies. If you read my blog, you would know why. I expected a lot from Director Ram, so it was somehow a letdown. It teaches many good values, however.
  11. Raja Rani by Atlee Kumar - Watched it yesterday night. There is life after love failure. There is love and love failure - the movie's caption goes. Atlee must have grown up watching lots of Maniratnam movies. You will find many similarities along the movie. It is an entertainer - nevertheless.

Off to make tea. I am pretty good at it. The weather is super duper cold. Reminds me of my days in Kodaikaanal. How I miss India - ALL THE TIME.
Music soothes the soul. Like this one. Anil Srinivasan's piano recitation is stirring. And the vocal feel by Sikkil Gurucharan. This is a mind blower.
Have lots of good days ahead. When life gets down, think of the great things you have achieved and want to. Think of your Mom and God. The dreary moments will pass by. Believe me. Love transcends all.
Take care. God Bless. This is Shalu signing off.

Shalu's soft spots in snapshots - 34 Stuff I love !!!

34 things I am fond of - in snapshots. The lazy blogger version.
Have fun. Paste a smile on your face no matter how dreary the day. Life goes on.....
God will take care of everything.....
