Yes, I'm back.. And it's 26 days to Deepavali 2016 !

Hope each and everyone of you, is doing awesome.
And happy, and blessed.
I am. And I hope you all are too.

Life is beautiful. It is. Truly.
And amidst all this immense beauty, I miss my Appa. So so much.
Not a day passes by without me, thinking of him.
He continues to be an integral part of my life.
He always will be.

Gratitude.
That's the reason I returned to blogging today.
I want to thank so many people.
For their presence and support in my life.

Thank you so much.
The Almighty God, first and foremost.
My parents. The greatest, to me. My Appa up in heaven.
My Amma. The one who still treats me like a kid.
Well, we remain their babies no matter how old we get, right ?
Parents. What God would look like if human.

My sister. My brother.
Mogan. The one who continues to faithfully, put up with my weirdness.
My little Yathu - who talks as much as me. And giggles, the same way too.

Inban & Devagi. The ones I carry in my heart. And, in my prayers.

Vani. My cousin. She's an epitome of happiness.
And, I laugh my heart out with her. She's a babe.

Sridhar Vittal Anna & his family. Distance is just a number. Chennai is just a blink away.
But the love and care you guys shower upon us, is just heartwarming. So truly blessed to have you all as part of my life journey.

Balasubramaniam Senthil Vadivel. He was this blog's earliest readers. That's how we met. Years have since passed. Our friendship is flourishing. Still. And, I pray it will. For always.

My best friends from my uni days. Jo, Sue, Vino, Rani & Anita.
My favourite girlfriend, Jes. She cheers me up like no other.
Erni, Zira & Gaga. The crazy bunch. We understand each other via facial expressions.

I have a long list actually. I'm sorry if I've missed out.
I carry the people I love in my heart.
I'm a Scorpio. We are the most faithful. Relationships mean the world to us.
So, thank you everyone.
Thank you for everything.
But most of all, for being in my life. I'm truly truly blessed.

Life is beautiful.. Smile.. Don't let anyone dull the sunshine..
Happiness is contagious and I'm sharing it with you.

No song of the day. I'm a nerd in embedding videos via the iPad. :D

God bless. Will write soon. Real soon.
Till the, keep reading.

Bahubali. 18 short reasons to watch.. :)

Bahubali.

You can't make everyone happy. That's life.
People will still try to find the faults. The pessimists - that's what they are called.
But, why worry, when you have given your best? Why stress when the cons outweigh the pros? Why let the minuscule create a mammoth issue?

It is, to me, one of the greatest Tamil movies, ever made. I enjoyed every minute of it, despite it ending nearly at 1am.

1. Rajamouli. He is an ace at animation. Think, “E” ~ the fly movie, starring Nani, Samantha & Kicha Sudeep.
2. The mammoth set. Even mammoth sounds a little plain for what we actually got to watch on screen.
3. Ramya Krishnan. Sivagami Devi. What charisma! She is the female version that fits the “Vayasaa aanalum un style mattum kuraiyiley” statement perfectly.
4. The final battle. I was awed. I felt I was watching the latest of the Indian Jones series. And, it WAS NOT long. WAS NOT.
5. The Shivan song. The one where Prabas/Shuva picks up the shivlinga and transports it right beneath the water falls ~ for his mom. Beautiful.
6. Kattapa. Satyaraj-Ji. The perfect role. He did perfect justice to his part. And, his awesome sword fights.
7. The warrior spirit in Tammana. Avantika. There was a certain fire in her.
8. The fact that Rajamouli didn't try to squeeze the storyline in the two hours and forty five minutes. You know what comes at the end. I'm eagerly waiting.
9. Sudeep Kicha. My favourite dashing villain. As the sword trader, Aslam.
10. The inauguration of the king's golden statue. What a momentum. The dancers, the singers, the slaves, the people, the hall, the elephants. Astounding is too small a word.
11. One year of pre production? God bless the crews patience and diligence.
12. That vehicle that Rana drives during the last battle. The one with that rotating scissors. I found it quirky.
13. The language spoken by those tribes. And their leader. What an impact. Armageddon-ish.
14. Days since I watched this epic. But, I'm still talking about it. Still flabbergasted. Still awestruck.
15. The Kali Statue in the open fields. Majestic.
16. 733. The number of days from the very first shoot to release. Can you imagine? Rajamouli’s patience. Golden. And, the fact, he didn't end with rushingly, just for the sake of making a movie. Refer No. 8 again. :)
17. The avalanche and its wonderful V-effects. Wow. :)
18.   Villain Naseer. And Rana. Both cunning. Another great performance.

Overall, a must watch. Go support their mammoth effort. Encouragement is a catalyst to further success.
So, when is the sequel coming huh?

Signing off, with love.
Shalu.

Vaa Vennila from Mella Tiranthathu Kathavu.

And, finally, here, I am, with greetings, from the heart :-)

I hope you are all fine. Fine, hale and hearty. And happy, too. Because, life is ACTUALLY about being happy. Being happy, over, even the smallest blessing bestowed. Being happy over what we have and what we, will have - with hard work, and faith and hope, and diligence.

So, here's me wishing you a tonnes and tonnes of happiness - as a starter. :-)

I wish I was more industrious in blogging. Yes. More spirited and persevering. More in full swing. Unfortunately, these are all, just a couple of mighty words that I am using to camouflage my hefty laziness.

I didn't post the entire of June. And, it's mid of July - already.
Today, I continue to write, from my heart. Because, I allow words to flow. I enjoy synchronization.

I miss my father. Beyond all the words that I can accumulate, here.

My day begins with his thoughts. Still. His photo is by my bedside. Still. He is my King. Still. And, always will.
My aunt visited us recently. She put up a few nights here, at our home. We had a great time catching up.
During one dinner, home cooked meals and all, Appa's name cropped up. Aunt told me how he was always referred as the perfectionist during his teacher's training days. She spoke of his beautiful handwriting, be it English or Tamil. His composed personality. His uprightness. And, his dashing good looks. Appa, well built, stood tall at 5 feet 11 and a half.
By the time Aunt finished her stories, I was crying profusely. So much so, that my dinner plate was filled with more tears than curry.
She was apologetic that she put me in such a state. But, I loved her stories. Loved as in capital L-O-V-E. Someone who was present during his younger days, relating them to me. To me, it was genuinely beautiful.
I made it very clear that I enjoyed her stories and that there was nothing to be sorry about. Appa, is the greatest love of my life. Thus, emotions, always, get gigantic at the mere regard of him.
I so love him.

During my recent absence, I traveled to Andaman Island, India. Saw Boracay Island, Philipines. Attended an awesome university reunion. Went frolicking in a water park. And, ate loads and loads.

Life, as I always say, is about the little things. Done, with people who matter. Money doesn't buy all these. It cannot, actually. To love and to be loved, is a very beautiful blessing. And, that is - happiness.

You MUST have someone in your life. MUST. MUST. MUST. I mean, we all, MUST have that special someone in our lives. If you already have, APPRECIATE them. If you don't, it is high time you go fish for one. SOMEONE TO COUNT ON AT ALL TIMES.

That - special someone. Your mom. Your best friend. Your other half. Your internet buddy. Anyone. Anyone who makes your heart chime in happiness. The one who you want to share your best moments and sorrow, with. Someone, you can count on, without a doubt.
I am blessed to have a handful. My mom. My sister. Mogan. My cherished and genuine friends, Inpan and Devaki. And, girls from my uni days.
I look for Amma, all the time. I share everything with her. And, we are great TV buddies. My mom is extremely well read. She is world news savvy. If I know anything, it's all her knowledge. Not mine. I just brush up and further research via the net. And, share it with her in return. It is a beautiful relationship. I count on her, both to criticize and support me. Her opinions are downright honest. And, that is what matters to me.
I share practically 99.0% with the people mentioned above. I trust them completely. Even, the greatest of my guarded secrets.
That's why I am echoing my sentiments that we all MUST have someone. To share parts of our life, with. Someone we can always rely on. Someone, we can seek, anytime - without the guilt.

Sharing is an excellent trait.
I just did. Shared parts of my days and thoughts with you.
So, you go do that, too.
Share something today.
Your favourite piece of chocolate cake. A good book you recently read.
A movie you think people should watch. Anything worth sharing with a good intention.

I am getting sleepy. Lack of oxygen. Hahaha.
I may get delusional, soon.
So, pardon me. Allow me to sign off before I blabber.

Allegiant.
That's a new word I learned today. It means, loyal. faithful.

Thus.
Allegiant-ly,
~Shalu~

Nadhi Pogum Koozhangal from Pisasu.

A very beautiful good morning to everyone.

Sungai Petani, my quaint hometown, is cloudy and mildly cold, this morning. I get to sleep in longer, thanks to it being Sunday. :)

Actually, I'm still in bed. Writing from my iPad. With a slight grin. I have a song that I want to post, too. But, the huge question will be, if I manage to do it. Or not.

I'm still a horrid iPad user. I still fail at embedding songs via it. STILL. So, if you are my blog reader and an ace at Apple products and how blogging works with them, please, puhleeezzzzzzzz enlighten me. :)

I'm heading for a vacation next month. It is very much looked forward to. However, finalization has yet to take place. Still a little fidgety and on the edge, although I am praying hard it the plan will go on, eventually.

God, I need a holiday. It has been two months since. Hahaha…. Don't curse me. Only two months, and I'm complaining? Not complaining actually. Rather, psyched out.

I'm a Scorpio. I'm the Tamil girl who loves to travel. Tamil, read correctly. Indian is vast. I want to be specific. ;)

I'm a homebody with a penchant for on and off getaways. I'm a fan of the art of rejuvenation. I'm happy in unwinding state. Simply put – I so so so love my holidays.

Most of us do, I believe. We fail to plan and make it a reality. There's always a reason. Work. Finance. Other obligations. Blah blah blah. But, if not now, when ? You've got to start somewhere. It will pick up in time. Those tiny fetes.

Start with a weekend. Go to a good café nearby. Not the noisy, rumbling one. Something quieter. Something that would put you in a mood, to go on a holiday. Because ambience is a great tranquilizer.

We have one here in Penang. It's named Harvest Time. Aratoon Road. A beautiful restaurant, it is. Renovated from a two storey colonial kind of house to an angelic white and resplendent diner, now. It's attractively old fashioned. Quaint. And, it always reminds me Pondicherry. Only that, it's white here and yellow there. And, thus, my drive (oh, yeah – drive) to holiday, gets ignited. ;)

I have a huge imagination, don't I? I bet many of you are wondering how a coffee café can ACTUALLY stem an idea to holiday? It does. For me. And it will, for you.
The catch is, that you have to give yourself room to visualize and ideate. I'm a beach person. So anywhere in vicinity of one, is awesome. I love temples and art architecture. India and Thailand score a bingo. That's how the drive, starts. Keyword – visualize, ideate and finally, accomplish. :)

Catch my point ? (You've got to say this like Kamal, in Michael Madana Kama Rajan, to his mammoth assistant, Beam Boy ;)
Oh, I've watched Kamal’s movie. At the cinema in my hometown, with my family and half a theater crowd. It's  an artistic movie. It's a movie with a message. Of how frail life can actually be. Especially when you are made aware of the time you have left – to live.

I found it a little boring. I am not a fan, first. And, I prefer him in comedies. His, work 100%. Think Michael, Madana, Kama, Rajan. Panchathanthiram. Pammal K Samantham. And MBBS. Hilarious to the core, weren't they?

Also, due to the fact that I watched OK Kanmani too manyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy times. You know – minimal dialogues, beautiful cinematography, lovely songs and the sombre feel. Mani Sir’s territory. So. I'm still reeling in it.

But, I've got to applaud Kamal’s initiative. The movie in the movie one was excellent. From comedy to songs to attire to graphics. Found it amusing. And, certain scenes, when realism sets it. Pulls the heartstrings.

Ahhh.. See the drives came in droves. Haha… Can't imagine I've written this much.

Got to go though. It's going to be 9am soon. I've another busy schedule. ;)

So, see ya around. Stay blessed.
And, go plan that holiday. And tell me about it – too. Would love to listen. :)

This is, Shalu, signing off. With love and affection.

p/s - such a mellifluous piece. I love this song. So does Amma. Uttara Unni Krishnan sings this perfect and crisp clear. And the sound of the violin. Majestic. I adore Myskin's movies. Amma doesn't though. Opinion differs. And, I stick to mine.

Mother's Day - For Amma & Appa. Kaatru Veliyil from Un Samayal Araiyil.

I'm breaking the norm.

Here's wishing not only my Mom, but also my dearest Dad, up in heaven, a very blessed Mother’s Day.

It took both of them to raise me. To be what I am today. It’s undeniable that a family runs solely because of a mother’s sacrifice and dedication. And, in ours, my father played an equally strong part.

Yes, I say, “Amma” first, whenever I fall. Yes, it's Amma that I confide in anything, and everything. Oh, yes - it's Amma this and Amma that.

But, my father – my Appa – he ruled my world.
He still does. He always will.
My Heavenly Mother.
The one I carry in my heart at all times, and everywhere I go.

So, here's ALSO wishing all the great guys who are totally supportive of their moms and wives and girlfriends, a Happy Mother’s Day.

For my fellow women – A Blessed Mother’s Day, TOO. ;)

What-A-Song. Illayaraja. Sung by himself. From an awesome movie. Listen on loop - you will fall head over heals with this one. :-)

Gratitude is beautiful. Nilaa Kaayum from Sembaruthi.

Dedicated to a beautiful stranger ~ Sridhar Vittal. The one residing in my favourite city in the whole wide world.

I came home from a tiring Friday but much anticipated weekend – due to a dating spree day and the very publicized, Mother’s Day – to see your name pop on my inbox.

Thank you. It put a grin on my face. It is, indeed, simple things in life that create mammoth effects.

Thank you – Sridhar Vittal.

No, I am not on a tour. Though, I wish I could, and was. And, neither, I am too busy, to write. Lazy? Oh, yes. That would be a more honest answer.

I need drive, to write. Only then, I can. Words must flow from my heart. I don't fancy the idea of constructing words into frilly sentences just for the sake of posting. I write because I want to.
And, days that I want to actually write, are dwindling.

Life is going fine. And, I hope it is the same for all my readers.

Yesterday, I went on a one day dating spree with two of my close girlfriends. We had maximum fun and food and frolicking. And, last night, after the girlie date, I joined my family at this local Indian hangout for a pre Mother’s Day celebration.

Today, I am a bit relaxed. But, we have another Mother’s Day outing, in the evening. Yeah, we are a close knit family, that enjoy our times together. But, aren't all Indian families, too?

Generally, the Indian family is a little conservative. We don't hug much. Or reveal our feelings through I-love-you’s. But, we love our kin, strong and sincere.

I've watched some great movies. And some, not so great ones. I've also listened to mellifluous Tamil songs from recent times. I've kept myself abreast with Kollywood. Lacked the drive, I told you earlier about, to blog, though.

It's a cloudy afternoon here. The thunder is rumbling. And, I assume it is going to pour heavy anytime soon. I love rain. I love the smell it gives earth. I love the tapping of it on my window pane. I love its chill that fills the room. I love the fact that it minimizes my whining on the hot weather.

To everyone, stay blessed. Stay happy. And, share your love. That's what we are all here for…...

Take care.  God bless.

Speak your heart. I have. :)

March is here.
And March, to me, is about, shouting out (writing, in this case) what I really think.

So here comes, Shalu, sincerely.
And pre-pardons if they hurt the heart, even a tiny weeny bit.

1. If you love people, tell them. Life is short. Ego is a horrible trait. And, you don't know what tomorrow holds. Just telling someone they matter, can chill the coldest soul. I have. To my loved ones. You, do too.

2. I seriously don't think Jessica Jude, the runner up in Super Singer a Junior 4, was worth her title. Apologies. But I am being honest here. If you had watched the program from day one, you will understand. It is not that she is non deserving. Just not on par. With any of the other 5 finalist. This was a talent based show. At least, that's what I assumed it was - until the devastating finals. These children were fed with knowledge that their talent and hard work combined, was the ultimate recipe to success. But, what triumphed in the end, was votes (bought excessively by one majority). At least, the organizers could have had two categories - voters and jury's. That would have justified the entire scenario. p/s : I know it does not matter much, but I ceased being a fan of Vijay TV’s Super Singer, Junior, Senior, whatsoever. :( So, don't expect me to talk about it any more. And, refer No. 1 – Jessica Jude, I love you. I love you not. :)

3. We should plant more trees. And garden, more often. The weather here, is unbearably hot. And humid. Keeping ourselves hydrated has become an important duty. It always is. But, on a mammoth scale now. Malaysia feels like a desert at noon. So, have I been to a desert? Hmmm. Not really. Rajasthan, yes. I know there's a desert somewhere there, although I didn't, specifically. Well, it is sweating hot, even at midnight. Got my point?

4. Old people need extra care. Extra love. Extra care. Extra attention. Extra conversation times. Extra everything. Kindly understand that. We too, will age, eventually. Put yourself in their shoes before blowing your heads off. We are extinct without them. UNDERSTAND? So, drop your smart mobiles and equipment, while they are around. Talk to them, instead. They love conversations. Try it. See for yourself. Unless they too are social media platform enthusiasts. Even, then, you can. Just send them a cute message. I love you. Thanks for being a part of my life. I am blessed to you have you. Yup. See them smile. See their eyes light up. After all, we've come as far as free messaging. Whatsapp is a blessing. Use it with them, too. Not just your young rocking hip friends.

5. If you love people, tell them. Life is short. Ego is a horrible trait. And, you don't know what tomorrow holds. Just telling someone they matter, can chill the coldest soul. I have. To my loved ones. You, do too…………………………… Yes, this is actually No. 1. Why not? We tell important things twice, don't we. All. I do, too. So, yes. Love is beautiful. It warms hearts. Fuzzes the soul. Blooms a smile. Invokes happiness. So, what are you waiting for? Grab that phone (better, the person ;) and tell them. So easy. As ABC. Tell them they matter. Tell them they are genuinely loved. Tell them that you are blessed for their presence in your life. Tell them thanks for being in your life. Tell them, just in simple words – Love you. Can?

So, yup. That's it. Some mildly harsh stuff I wish to tell people.

Have a marvelous March. It's going to move real fast, just like January and February. So, make the best of it.

Till then, this is Shalu, signing off, with love.

Take care. God bless.

Appa's Kannama. Happy Valentine's, everyone.

I celebrate another, non gazetted Valentine's Day.

Appa called me Kannama. And on some days, Shalu Ma.
Shalu Ma, was more of how Amma called me, during my schooling years.
She still does, now. Once in a while, though.
My darling sister and over protective brother, have their own ways of calling me, too.
But that will be a whole new topic that, I don't intend to dwell in, at the moment.

Certain pet names give you goosebumps. These are mine.
And they come from people I carry in my heart, everywhere I go.

I grew up in an environment abundant in love.
My parents were the perfect couple. My Amma, the ever supportive wife. The stern but loving Mom.
The family, that was and is there for me, every day of my life.

And, Moganadass...
The best friend of infinite years.
Moderately reserved. Beautifully loving.

I am blessed, indeed.
I am thankful, to the Almighty.
For everything.

So, here's wishing the loves of my life, a very very very Happy Valentine's Day.
My Appa, up in heaven.
My Amma. My Akka.
My Mogan.
My brother. My share of genuine extended family and friends, too.

Good morning. God bless.

Love,
~Shalu~

p/s :- surprise song :) listen. it's beautiful. one of my present favourites.

12 Date Ideas ~ my Tamil girl version

Early Valentine wishes. :)

2015 is the year of dates. Dates, dates and more dates. At least for me. It was one of my resolutions.

2014 was a little lame. Scarce and sporadic. Yes, it was. Just writing it, emphasises the pathetic tone.

So, this year, I want to date more. To enjoy those beautiful moments. To make time for the sweet nothings.

And, I intend to abide by them.

And, what better time to start, than February, the month of love?

12 Date Ideas - I want to have with him.

1. The Temple Visit
My ultimate date, would be definitely this. An early morning visit to the temple. The tranquility and serenity of this place of worship. The peacefulness it brings the heart, is just speech defying. Just him & me. In the presence of the Almighty. Amidst the chime of temple bells, the chant of sacred verses and the aroma of jasmines, roses, sandalwood and incense. And, a stop over for breakfast. Think idli and Madras coffee.

2. The Sunrise Watch
Yes. The Lets Watch The Sunrise Together Date. The one that begins with a phone call. Where he candidly asks if I would want to see it with him. And, where, I would happily say yes. You know, the well spent one, where you talk stuff, hold hands, embrace the silence and enjoy the dancing of waves, as the sun rises, embodying a new beginning. And a simple Western breakfast, there after.

3. The Joggers Park
Oh, yes. The Joggers Park. Oh, and this is not only confined to health freaks or the wannabes. Huge trees. Sweet breeze. Ample shade. Wooden benches. Morning dew. The smell of earth, and grass, entwined. Relationships grow over simple stuff like this, not material ones. Oh, and this is not only confined to health freaks or the wannabes. Stroll along. Jog. Brisk walk. Whatever. Spend time together. That's all that counts.

4. The Coffee Cafe
The coffee cafe date. Something I will never say no too - even on my busiest days. I love coffee. I love tea, too. And, I love quaint restaurants which serve them. Ambience is such a turn on. Just sitting with your greatest crush, sipping a hot drink and exchanging sweet nothings - is downright lovely. Malaysia, every nook and corner, has an endless list of superb cafes and hangouts. It's a matter of starting - somewhere.

5. The Scooter/Bicycle Ride
The thought of the date itself puts a huge grin on my face. Him & me. A scooter. Or a simple bicycle. So honestly romantic. The ability to hug him from the back. To fiddle with his hair and ears. To scream in ecstasy, as you ride downhill. There's a certain kind of happiness when he leads. And, you know, you are in safe hands.

6. The Movie Date
Yup. A good movie, that is. And, Tamil, preferably. A cup of chilled drink. Two straws. And, a strong hand grip at every time a beautiful moment comes. If I could turn back time and choose 3 Tamil movies that for a date, Alaipayuthey would always be Número Uno. Number One. Then, the recent Panayarum Padminiyum. A stellar. And last but not least, any Ajith movie. For him. Think Don.

7. The Beach Picnic
I am an aquaholic. Read that right. Please. Aquaholic. A person who loves water. Any place associated with water. Especially the beach. Mention beach, and I am hyper. I am somewhat lucky. Penang is an island. And, beaches are a plenty. Picnics should be somewhat early morning. Or late evening, when the sun is down. Some chocolate drink, fresh juice, sandwiches, chips, a picnic mat, and voila, you are set.

8. The Count the Stars Match
How beautiful a thought. Not to mention, jaw dropping romantic. On a bright cloudless night, however. But, insect repellants would be very handy. You don't want to spend the night shooing away mosquitoes instead, do you? And, at the end of the day, the magic lies in making the best, out of trivial moments like this.

9. The Kitchen Party
Cooking together. Yes. What more couples should do - more often. Bonding is a necessity in any relationship. And, what better way than preparing a meal together. I think it's a sweet idea. Deciding on a simple but lovely menu. Going to the grocers. Buying the stuff. And returning home to start the entrée. Not to mention, setting up a romantic atmosphere, Illayaraja's music playing softly in the background, and all.

10. The Family / Friend Hangout
I grew up to the notion that love begins with family. Still do. Always will. A guy who ensures you are a part of his family and friends, is ALWAYS a keeper. Make the best of those outings. Be pleasant to everyone in his circle. And, be genuine. Put the effort to be a part of it. Establish a connection with his clique. He wanted you in, so make him proud.

11. The Rain Dance
No. Not the non virtuous one as in Bolly or Molly movies. I am referring to the ones that happen at the brink of the moment. When it's starting to rain a little heavier, you are both out in the rain, he catches hold of your umbrella and throws it away. And, you just embrace the joy of getting drenched in the rain with someone you genuinely adore. Love is about the small things.

12. The Pet Shop Trip
I love animals. Especially dogs. And birds. I have actually done this one, albeit it being a non date kind of thing. More of a stop over. He wanted to get food for his fish, an Arowana. But, I enjoyed those little moments. Both of us drooling over the animals in the pet shop. The rabbits. The hamsters. The birds. The fishes. Why not? Especially if both love animals.

Note : iPads are least Blogger friendly. And I am not too Internet savvy. I want to make that clear. So, I am currently not able to post a song. Pardon me. But, given a choice it would be, at this very moment - "Haiyayo Nenju Alayathudi...." from my favourite Aadukalam.

Till I see you all again, this is a signed off with lots of love,
Shalu.R.

Ps ~ oh, please wish me luck. Will need them, lots. ;)

A year older. And, hopefully, wiser.

Greetings from Shalu.

First, and foremost - thank you, from the very bottom of my heart, to everyone, for the birthday wishes. The one which came, some days after the mid of November 2014. Thank you for the blessings, the love, and the care.

Birthdays are very personal, to me. No. Not because of the getting old issue.
But, because, I truly believe, it is a day you celebrate with loved ones. The family and friends that you genuinely hold close to heart. And, I did, exactly that.

God and Appa. Thank you for continuing to watch over me. And for blessing me, from up above.

Amma, my Goddess. The one who makes me realise that heaven will always be a place on earth, as long as I have her, with me. Thank you for the midnight, surprise party.

Akka. My best friend. My second mom. We share a 13 year gap. But, we are allies. Compatriots. Shopping buddies. Gossip gang. Partners in craziness.
And, she is my favourite Whatsapp contact. Yes, such a favourite, that we share secret messages, even when in the same room. Thank you for the side dishes for party. Thank you for ensuring a good attendance.

My brother, Segar. Who remembered. For once. Hahaha.....
Guys rarely keep track of dates and all. So, when he actually called to wish, I found it a little weird and funny. Brothers. They can drive you crazy. He does, too. But, he cares just as much. And, I continue to count on him, anytime of the day.

Mogan. For one of the earliest wishes. For making me smile from ear to ear. For continuing to be a part of my life. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.

Inpan and Devaki. My besties in London. For the phone call across the miles. For the messages. For just being there, in my life. You've put our friendship on a pedestal. You're family, guys. And, I love you both as well as the two little ones, so very, very much.

Sivaram. My blog reader. Years have transformed us into Facebook and email friends. Thank you, too, for that surprise phone call, from India. I was truly taken by surprise because you remembered. And not to mention, that sweeter than sweet poem via mail. May God bless you in your new journey of life. And, yes, thanks. Very much appreciated.

To my besties, who compromise of 5 crazy girls, from my uni days - Thanks. You guys rock.

To everyone else who is aware of my EXACT birth date, and dropped by to wish, thank you, too.

Yes, I am blessed. Thanks.

Take a piece of the cake. Virtually. That's all that is possible for now.

Signing off,
~Shalu~

Thunbam Nergayil Yazh Eduthu - Transcendent Tamil & Its Translation.

For and with sincere thanks :-
Thiru Kathiravan Krishnamurthi of Westford, Massachusetts.

Every single word, in the post, belongs to him. Solely.
His patience in intricately explaining this beautiful Tamil song to ordinaries like me, requires a standing ovation.
I am giving him one, albeit virtually.

To have someone of such high status and intelligence with depth in Tamil language, do the translation, for the mere fact of running into my blog by chance, is indeed, a dream come true.

I am so thankful to him. For his genuine effort.
I have been vocal about the level of gratitude I owe him, and have written a couple of mails to him, since.

Without his translation, this post would not have materialised.

Nothing has been changed about the translation.
Nothing.
Nil.
His explanation is just precise.
Written from the heart.
Thus, I don't want to change a thing.
I read his translation in awe.
Tamil is just so immensely beautiful.
I am so very proud today.
Because I read, write and speak this amazing language.
I would have never been able to justify the exquisiteness of this language, had I not learned it.
Appa, thank you.
You instilled the love.

Thiru Kathiravan Krishnamurthi. Heartfelt thanks.
Words would not be sufficient to thank you.
Dinner. On us. When you and your little clan (Puggy, the world's most pampered pet, too) plan that much awaited Penang, Malaysia trip.

And, yes.
Appa always taught me to think good and pray for another.

Thiru Kathiravan Krishnamurthi
May The Almighty God bless you and your family with happiness, prosperity and well being for always.
My warmest regards to everyone at home.
Vani Ma'am, Mugil & Venil.
They already sound like family.
Love and affection, is indeed, the world's greatest antidote.
Thanks again.

வாழ்க தமிழ்.

As written by the very respected Thiru Kathiravan :-

The song was written during the days of Tamil renaissance.
Tamil that was sung in temples, stages and in dance performance was getting a back seat to Telugu and Skt in Tamil Nadu.
In the 1600s Tamil Trinity of Muthu Thanadavar, Marimuthu Pillai and later Arunachala Kavi pioneered Keerthanas.
Bharathidasan wrote the lines longing for olden days when Tamil music set to dance is performed.
This song is a outpouring of his wish.

First Para :

yAzh is a precursor to veeNa used in music.
Ancient Tamil poets during Bhakthi era sang and pANars (instrumentalists) set them to music.
The system of paNs is still in vogue among the devotional singers.

yAzh_eduththu enakku inbam sErkka maattaayA.
It is a plea to the child (kanne-young one) to sing in Tamil with yAz accompaniment..

The poet is singing to a child.
The poet has love for the language but he puts sometimes in shoes of somebody who lack love in their heart.

When I run into (nErkayil) sadness (thunbam,
will you please play the harp (yAzh; bring me joy (inbam)

Sing in Tamil, please will you alleviate the distress (allal neekka) in the mind (nenju) of loveless (anbillaa)

Second Para :

The poet not only wishes a song set to yAz music.
He wants more.
He pleads with the child to perform kooththu (a dance form).

vanbum eLimaiyum sUzhum naattilE
vanbu-extravaganze, haughty show
eLimai-simplicity -->humility.

In the land (naattil) bring surrounded (sUzhum) by both vanbu and eLimai,
will you please bring out the true feeling of life
Would you please give a show of fine Tamil koothu
Would you please?

anRai naRRamizhk koothu muRai(it could mean Tamil Koothu system of yesteryears (anRai)or the dance form sweet like amizhthu (nectar of celestials)

There are many types of koothu (it is a system of dance) mentioned in silappathikaaram composed by Chera Prince Ilango.

Third Para :

The poet talks about Valluvar who wrote 1330 couplets divided into three chapters covering various aspects of life in terse form.

kuRaL -short poem, aRam-virtue.. maRam (thamizh)~ veera (skt)-valor. maRam is subtly different.. It is courage in a virtuous sense.

When we (yaam) are not clear about aRam and maRam
Would you please recite (iyambu) a couplet from our law giver.

iRaiyanaar- iRai is dispense.. give away, spill

iRaiyanar==valluvar who gave us moral code of living well.

Final Para :

Bharathidaasan has composed a number of devotional songs set to music in his early days.
When he met Bharathi he had shared a number of his poems and Bharathiaar was impressed.
One of the common thing about these poets was that they were well versed in ancient texts and music.

The poet wishes the child to develop skills by reading the ancient texts that were characterized into: aham and puRam.
Aham deals with love and life concerning the hero and heroine.
Puram deals with war, virtues of emperors and life outside the family.

Won't you exhibit skills of Tamil poets
Won't you master aham and puRam of
yore and become
Wealth to this soul that begot (iinRa) you
Won’t you become a wealth for Tamil! Oh darling

Kannamaa, is what my father called me. The Jigarthanda song.

Greetings.

It's drizzling over here. Not warm neither cold, but definitely better than dry and humid.
I have been down with the fever, flu and sore throat for the past one week and more.
Visited the doctor, thrice. Yes, thrice. The last, being yesterday night.
My temperature was at 39.5 to 40 degrees Celsius high, so the doctor gave me 2 injections.
One for the fever and the other for the throat infection.
I am half recovered now. The is a slight running nose and a lesser than mild cough, but way better than what I was the whole of last week.
And, for the first time in days, I slept well.
I miss Appa, especially at moments like these. Amma is a wonderful caretaker, nevertheless. All 100%. She made me rice porridge. She poached eggs. She made Chinese noodles. And bought me, fresh coconut water. I am being pampered to the max. But, I miss Appa, despite all.....

Kannamaa, is how Appa called, me. I still raise eyes if someone does so, out of the blue.
It's equalent to being called the Queen. The exact way Appa doted upon me. Like a Queen. I have no doubt that even Amma and Akka were second to me. I was, definitely, the only apple of his eye. And, that is the plain truth.....

I enjoy this song. It's a little eccentric, though. I was suppose to watch the movie at the theatres recently, but had to make way for something else. Everyone is raving about it. And, I am a big fan of Naalaya Iyakunar contestants. Karthik Subburaj, the director is one. And there is also the young talents comprising of Siddarth, Lakshmi Menon and Bobby Simha. People who ACTUALLY act, not flaunt. So, more reasons to watch this movie.....

Signing of, now.
Take care. God bless.
Sleepy..... Thanks to all the medication.

p/s :- using an iPad to blog is like using a GPS tracker in the Sahara Desert. Or perhaps I am not too Internet savvy especially with iOS devices.

Po Indru Neeyaaga from Velaiyilla Pattathari

Heyya everyone.....
Hope everything is as rosy as it ought to be.

Malaysia is in mourning. Our national flag and all state flags will fly at half mast until the 21st of July 2014. Our second major tragedy, this year. And, barely 4 months after losing the MH370 to God-knows-where.

It is heart wrenching to watch the news. Be it local or international. The stories of the unfortunate passengers who boarded the plane, stab you like a titanium knife. The happy lives they lived, lost in split second.

CNN calls it the "worst crime scene in the world". We cannot fail to agree. It's an active war zone. There are so many setbacks. The rebels. The pro Russians. The politicising. The pin pointing. The looting. The blazing temperature. The rotting bodies. The stolen black box. It's just devastating.

And, in the midst of all this gloominess, we are trying to console ourselves with the little happy things.

I received a whatsapp message this late evening. From a friend.
"Watch this !" it read.
"The girl's name is Shalini. And she wears lots of churidar suits, just like you. :) It's a fun movie. I can watch it with you - for the second time ;)"
I reply with a ":)".
This video clip is attached.
It is love at first sight for me. First sight and first listen.
Not just because my favourite actor Dhanush is singing it, and the lead actor in the movie, but because the video is done in perfect taste.
So very very romantic.
Watch it. And listen to the oh-so-beautiful lyrics.
It soothes the heart at this testing time.....
A "Shalu" kind of song ;)

Have a great week. Take care. Stay blessed.

Love,
-Shalu-

10 reasons (and more) why EVERYONE should watch Pannaiyarum Padminiyum.

I am definite about this movie. Shalu's choice - undoubtedly.
That everyone should watch it.
A great movie inspired by a 10 minute short film from Naalaya Iyakunar.
If there is one film for 2014 which blew my mind, made me sit up and smile and awe over the evolving Tamil film industry, this was it.
Watch it. All of it. Don't miss even a second. It is way too beautiful to miss.
A decent movie that evokes the sentiments. Of love, family and relationships. Be it with human or inanimate objects.
What-A-Movie.
I am certain this movie is headed for a string of awards and accolades.
10 reasons why EVERYONE must watch this stellar.
  1. Jayaprakash, the Pannaiyar.  The a Number One reason. He is brilliant in his role. The main reason why I have watched this movie, all 152 minutes, three times. And each time, unfazed and with the same level of content. As the village Pannaiyar, as the loving husband, as the devoted father. In every scene, he scores a perfect 10. His expressions, flawless. His acting ability, astounding. I am an ardent fan of his. Ardent, yes.
  2. Thulasi, Chellama, the Pannaiyar's wife. Gawd, she does her role in equal to the brilliance of the Pannaiyar. She is a natural. The wife who stands by her husband. Filial. Encouraging. Flirty. Their chemistry is perfect. So perfect, that I felt they fared far better than the younger couple.
  3. Vijay Sethupathi as the Driver Murugesan. One of my favourite actors ranks third, in this movie. The elderly couple were too good. But, Vijay Sethupathi plays his part very well. As he always does. He is indeed a versatile actor. He shines as the Pannaiyar's driver. He radiates as the son like figure to the Pannaiyar's wife. And, the down to earth lover to the heroine.
  4. Padmini, the car.  This awesome premier vehicle, is green in colour, large, strong and holds a major capacity in the movie. It is the village's stately symbol. And half the title of the movie.
  5. The beautiful songs. All of them. Justin Prabhakaran, the movie music director should be applauded for an all line up of heart melting numbers. Vaali has penned the lyrics for three of the songs. My favourite is Onnakaaga Poranthene as well as Ennakaaga Poranthaaye. Back to back male and female versions. Love, described in such magnificence.
  6. Peedai @ Peruchaali.  The guy's actual name is Balasaravanan. He adds laughter to the already candid moments. He has a special ability. What? Well, watch it. You will know. It's indeed so very hilarious.
  7. Neelima Rani, the daughter. The villain of the movie. You will despise her. Daughters always  prioritise their parents even after marriage. This is fact. But, not in her case. She is constantly trying to loot something from her parental home. And, she plays her part so well, you will frown disapprovingly every time she visits her parents.
  8. Original screenplay by S U Arunkumar.  What a screenplay. He is the brainchild to this awesome movie. He hails from the Naalaya Iyakunar league. So, it's not surprising at all. He has all the makings to be a celebrated young director. Hats off.
  9. Gokul Benoy's cinematography. I have always been a huge fan of cinematography. Like Rajiv Menon. Mark Koninckx. Manoj Paramahamsa. Benoy has done great justice to the entire movie. Crisp, clear and overwhelming shots. I watched it on HD and DVD. Original. They did not play at a cinema near home. Had they, I would have, watched it there. Three times, undoubtedly. Just like am doing now.
  10. The string of awards. That it is going to win. Watch it before it is going to be the talk of the town. It is, already now. But do so, before the juries from acclaimed bodies, get together and decide so. Then, when they give away the awards, you will smile, knowing you have watched an awesome screenplay, prior to its merit bestowal.
When you finish watching this movie, that feel good motor response is going to enfold you. Trust me.

Have a blessed week. July is just days away. Yes I have been a horrible, lazy blogger - sincere apologies. :-)

Take care. God Bless.

June is here, and so am I ! And, finally, "WHATSAPP"ing ! :-)

Hello everyone.
Hope the days have been good to you, as they were to me.
Today is Ganesh Chathurti. Today is also the first day of the sixth month of the year - June.
Today, is also, the day, I FINALLY, yes, FINALLY,  got whatsapp on my android.
So, I thought, what better day, to post a word or two.
Life is going great. I want to keep it so.

I never fancied whatsapp - from the beginning.
I also, do not, cling onto my mobile, as if it was favourite soft toy.
Thus, it did not make me feel displaced or left out, when the rest of my family and friends, were having a  gala, at it.

But, today, I gave in. Finally. And,  I owe it these individuals.
  • My darling sister, is leaving, for a European vacation. 2 weeks, approximately. That's means, limited and restricted modes of communication. The only way, I will get to keep in touch, at a bargain, is through whatsapp. The MAIN reason. I cannot imagine not talking to her, and my Mom. They continue to be my pillars of strength.
  • My bestie who resides in London. She is expecting her second child soon. And, yes, I will be the distinguished godmother, again. Again, the key word is economical. Nominal. Whatever that takes not to splurge. It's not that I am some big saver - but I am pretty careful, with money. The drive being - holidays. Do you know how costly they can be ? Hmmm. Give it a thought.
  • My group of girlfriends. My uni mates. 6 of us. We remain great friends. I received a SMS from one of them, some months back. "Please get whatsapp ! The best place for the 6 of us to chat. We already have a group. Waiting for you." I miss them, lots. I am the only one still living here, in the north. The rest are all based in the country's capital. We spent more than 4 years of our lives together, in the same hostel for two years and in a rented home, the remaining ones.
I am still a novice at it. Still learning the tricks. I even, said hello, to my brother who lives in KL, via whatsapp. And, he replied, with a smiley. Not bad, huh ?

Manic Monday. I hope not. I look forward to it being a wonderful one.
A start to a pleasant week ahead.
Wish you all the same too. Stay blessed. Take care.
Smile. Life is too short to sulk about.
And, yes, whatsapp - for free - to that friend, you have not said a hello to, in a long while. It feels great to make a person happy that they are in your thoughts. Love and affection does wonders.
Really. Cross my heart. It does.

I love this song. But have yet to watch the movie. Soon - hopefully...
Tamil at one of its loveliest - virtuously -
"வாவென்று சொல்லும் முன்னே, வருகின்ற நியாபகம்,
கண்ணே உன் சொல்லில் கண்டேன், அறியாத தாய்முகம்....."

Again, signing off.
Shalu says, "Take care. God bless."

Recommended Tamil Movies - 5 awesome Tamil movies within the first 5 months of the year. :-)

I really LOVE watching GOOD Tamil movies and ALWAYS recommend them, to fellow, enthusiasts.
2014 has introduced us to a handful of truly attested ones.
I watched ALL the ones mentioned here, in the theaters.
Yes - I deserve a pat on the back, for it.
For encouraging the entire crew of the movie, in a somehow tiny, minuscule way.
And, for NOT buying pirated DVDs.

So, listed here, are 5 good Tamil movies that have come my way these 5 months (Jan-May 2014) and the reasons why I think you shoud join my bandwagon.

    Damaal Dumeel by Shree.

I truly love this movie. Don't ask me why. And, if you do not enjoy it as much as what I did, my advance apologies. It is indeed my current favourite Tamil dark comedy.  I had so much of fun watching it. It was full blown amusing. I do not want to tell you the plot. It will diffuse the suspense and the screenplay. The screenplay was original and the flow, fluid. It cheered the flat mood I had when I went in the theater, reluctantly. And, yes what-ta prodigious ending. Well, if you are someone who loves laughing exuberantly like me, then, this is for you.

    Thegidi by P. Ramesh
My other favourite movie. A deserving Tamil whodunnit. A totally out of Tamil cinema scenario. Again, I do not want to divulge more than I should. You have to watch it, for yourself. The screenplay was original and the acting spontaneous. It was an added bonus that they had superb songs. And, a possibility of a sequel.
So, make that cup of coffee, dim the lights, snuggle on your couch and watch this one without battling an eyelid.
p/s - Oh, yes - Janani Iyer, the heroine, has great fashion sense. And, the song titled "Vinmeen" is my current mobile ringtone. :-)

    Goli Soda by Vijay Milton
This inspiring movie garnered rave reviews. I insisted on watching it when the rest of the gang wanted to Ajith's Veeram. Eventually, they were glad with my choice. The growing up Pasanga team returned with a bang - parallel to a volcanic explosion. These kids are plain natural. And, the movie was made in such good spirits that it uplifts us, as curtains draw. This is a MUST watch for the year 2014, and is expected to collect numerous awards, in the near future.

    Naan Sigappu Manithan by Thiru
For starters, I am no fan of Vishal. But, I adore Lakshmi Menon. She is among the present time ace heroines. I watched it due to coercion from some friends. Fortunately, I sincerely enjoyed it. There are many things in this movie that make you smile. And, just as many that will break your heart. The chemistry between the hero and the heroine is undeniable. There are a couple of huge twists in the movie. And, that is exactly what makes this movie something to invest your time in. Give it a try. You may end up liking it - just like me. :-)

    Maan Karate by Kris Thirukumaran
I went to watch this movie with a group from friends way past midnight. 12.45am to be exact. We could not get 12am tickets. They were all sold out, so we had to opt for the next one, as we had already made the trip to the mall where this movie was playing. Even, the 12.45am tickets were fast selling and we managed to get adjoining seats. I was worried that I might doze off.  I have never been a fan of daffy, shallow movies. I expected it to be - apologies - but what else can you expect from a Sivakartikeyan-Hansika combination. Delightedly, it was an awesome non stop comedy. I laughed - my heart out - from the very first minute until the utmost end. This is a true comedy. There is no con here Trust me.

So, that is for now. Hope you liked my compilation.
You know what ? The Tamil cinema is unfolding fascinatingly. I am proud that it is no more about singing by the beach, running around trees and fighting from Arctic to Antartica. I am glad the villain does not carry a big mole on his right cheek and wears a red bandana everywhere he goes. I am pleased there is healthy influx of new heroes and heroines that manage to proof themselves with creditable acting abilities.
So, hail my Tamil cinema. :-)

See ya. Take care. God Bless.
