Recommended Tamil Movies (2000-2011) for fellow zealots ...

I am, a brazen, good Tamil movie fan. I do not believe in big names and banners. A great storyline, done pleasantly, would please me lots. And, I am proud that the Tamil movie industry is evolving positively, with each passing day. We have been having a large number of good movies. Of lately. Good to those who believe in moral and ethics of stories - done tastefully. Movies like this rarely appeal to the mass, due to many factors. If you are a fellow zealot,  for  praiseworthy Tamil movies, read on. If you aren't, chances are you are not going to agree with me, on most of the names here.
2000
Alaipayuthey by Maniratnam - Do not ever miss this. Ever. One of the most romantic Tamil movies ever released. I have watched it countless times, and I still love watching it. Will always do. This is purely gratifying. My utmost favourite. You will understand why I am super crazy about this one, when you do. A present day epic. MUST WATCH.
Kandukonden Kandukonden by Rajiv Menon - One more stunning movie. For a great storyline, an even greater picturisation, heart stopping songs and oh-so-natural acting. Wholesomely enticing.
Parthen Rasithen by Saran - A far cry from your usual Tamil story, this movie took me by surprise. Simran did a wonderful job. Watch it just for her. Do not want to spill the beans by commenting further.
Bharathi by Gnana Rajasekaran - The chronicles of the great Mahakavi Bharathiyar. You do not need to know him, to watch. Just do. It will move you and tug your heart strings. Such beautiful motion which went unnoticed by many.
2001
Azhagi by Thangar Bachan - Of first love, poverty, the importance of education, missed opportunities and parenthood, this is another mile stone in the Tamil film industry.
Kasi by Vinayan - Thumbs up for bold and courageous ending. The movie that brought Vikram to great heights.
Nandha by Bala – Another surprising storyline. Rameswaram is illustrated beautifully.
Paarthale Paravasam by K. Balachander - I am a devoted fan of KB. He is the dauntless director. All his movies have that lion heart feel. He is an ace at confronting taboo subjects. This one is a never before attempt in Tamil cinema.
Pandavar Boomi by Cheran – Cheran. Another of those distinctive directors. This movie portrays family relationships and friendship in new altitudes. A family entertainer that will sure enjoy.
2002
Anbe Sivam by Sundar C – An intensely emotional movie. It is startling to know the Tamil movie industry can actually come up with great ones like this. One that will make realize how short life can be, and why you should be thankful for each given day.
Five Star by Susi Ganesan – Another one of my favourites. Not just because of Prasanna’s cute, guy-next-door image, but for the more prominent reasons. Friendship, family, love, promises and affirmations and the strings that come attached. Another great movie that was glossed over by the mass.
Kannathil Muthamittal by Maniratnam – Oh God, where do I start, when it comes to this one? Emotionally breathtaking. Beautifully heart stirring. A truly awe inspiring Tamil movie. A wonderful one which touches on how far parents’ go to fulfill their child’s happiness. Sterling performance by P. S. Keerthana, R. Madhavan, Simran, Nandita Das, Pasupathy and Prakash Raj.
Solla Marantha Kathai by Thangar Bachan – A village based movie. On dignity, sacrifices and humiliation and how the downfalls of your life, is what strengthens you best.
2003
Iyarkai by Jeganathan – A surprising storyline. With Rameswaran as the backdrop setting. Said to be based on Dostoyevsky's "White Nights".
Kadhal Konden by Selvaragavan – This critically acclaimed Dhanush starrer took us all by surprise. For me, it is still of the his best. A movie which will make you sit up and applaud the assuring Tamil film industry.
Kaaka Kaaka by Gautham Menon – Do I need to elaborate on this one? The perfect dosage of everything the industry needed.
2004
7G Rainbow Colony by Selvaragavan – Again. Critically acclaimed as well as a commercial success, this one moved us all to tears. A movie which would make you evaluate life, and how short it can actually be.
Aayutha Ezhuthu by Maniratnam – I love this movie despite it themed practically on politics in contemporary India. My favourite character, is that of the notorious Inba by R. Madhavan. An overall good movie which did not sit well with the mass.
Azhagiye Teeye by Radha Mohan – It is sad to know that this movie did not become a success, monetarily as well as vice versa. I still believe this is one great movie. Clean, wholesome and a beautiful, fresh storyline. If you believe in good movies, this is a must watch. I still would, anytime given. A simple movie that took me by huge surprise.
Chellamey by A.R Gandhikrishna – Another good one. Believed to be one of 2004’s highest grossing flims. A radical narration of how too much of love can turn harmful.
Devathai Kanden by Boopathi Pandian – This movie scored a big 10 in my books, for its inspiriting climax. Watch. You will understand.
Kaathal by Balaji Saktivel – A beautiful true, love story that took Tamil Nadu by storm.
Vaanam Vasapadum by P.C Sriram – Despite having a number of reputed actors and actresses, this movie failed as a commercial success, most probably due to its gory storyline. A shocking and staggering screenplay.
      2005
ABCD by Saravana Suppiah – A bouncy and energetic movie with a forward looking and open minded ending. An optimist’s cup of tea.
Kanda Naal Muthal by V.Priya – Yours truly’s top 5 favourites, undoubtedly. I love this movie for everything. If you love it just as what I did and still do, then we stand a chance of a decent affiliation.
The chemistry and the revulsion between Prasanna and Laila were so naturally, awesome. Must watch. Special mention for the last 30 minutes, which will keep you nail biting and on your toes, wondering what will happen and what will not. Did I say “Must Watch”?. Ya. Rephrasing.
Thavamai Thavamirundhu by Cheran – A father’s love know no boundaries, just like a mother’s. Most movies root on the latter, but Cheran went the mile, and focused on the former. A beautiful story like no other. Applauds for being a benchmark.
      2006
Sillunu Oru Kaadhal by N. Krishna – Another great screenplay. The hero’s past and present love life was justified charmingly. How can you go wrong, when love is the subject ?
      2007
Mozhi by Radha Mohan – A super hit at the box office and one that is critically acclaimed. Do not miss this for anything. A feel good movie, that would move you to tears and leap in joy. An all time favourite.
Periyaar by Gnana Rajasekaran – Just like Bharathi, you do not need to know him to watch. On the life of social reformer, Periyar E. V. Ramasamy. Standing ovations for this one.
Karuppusamy Kuthagaikaarar by Moorthy – I am recommending this movie for a couple of reasons. The importance of education for a women. The significance of family support in our undertakings. The emphasis on respecting elders. The gravity of love in our life. Karan deserves a special mention for the dialogues he delivers during the final moments of the movie. So does, the lyrics of the beautiful “Uppu Kallu” song.
Satham Podathey by Vasanth – Everyone has rave reviews about this movie. A spine chiller that would keep you glued until the very end.
Katrathu Tamil by Ram – This would be my Number 2 favourite. Reasons are unnecessary. And, the fact that this movie was not a commercial success, least bothers me. This is for the judicial, level headed, sensible and balanced ones. Everyone who isn’t would never be able to appreciate a movie as moving as this. I could write pages about this one. Jeeva astounded me with his performance, as did Anjali. Everything about the movie is beautiful, including the barren but panoramic Maharasthra.
Kaloori by Balaji Sakthivel – Many college themed movies released after this one, but none were as good as what it was. An emotional movie that would tug your heart, hours after you have finished.
      2008
Vaaranam Aayiram by Gautham Menon – No comments. The movie speaks for itself. If you have not watched, shame on you. That is all I have to say.
Anjaathey by Myshkin – Another praiseworthy attempt. Special mention for a deserving cast and a new, out of the box storyline.
Kannum Kannum by Marimuthu – An emotional screenplay. How fate schemes despite everything we plan. A good movie which did not appeal to the mass.
Subramaniapuram by Sasikumar - This low budget film received critical acclaim for its original script, expert direction, screenplay, editing, accurate sets and costumes to resurrect Madurai from the 1980s. and all that done, with relatively new actors.
Dhanam by Siva – A stormy storyline you would never have expected to come, from the Tamil film industry. This is a rare gem. Sangeetha earned rave reviews for her portrayal of Dhanam.
Raman Thediya Seethai by Jeganath – Another feel good movie you can enjoy with anyone. This movie will put a smile on your face long after you have finished.
Seval by Hari – A twist in the tale movie which I believe was a good and novel attempt.
Bommalaatam by Bharathiraja – You would be thrown in a tizzy with the way this movie concludes. A puzzling and bewildering storyline.
Abiyum Naanum by Radha Mohan – If this movie does not move you tears, then you must be intolerant, stony and callous. Parenthood at its best.
      2009
Venilla Kabadi Kuzhu by Susindran – I liked this movie although many considered it to be much of a bore. Good movies do not need big names. This one proved so. Set in a rural and remote village, emphasizing on a Kabadi, a Tamil sport activity, with a clean, no hush love story – this is brisk and refreshing.
Siva Manasula Sakthi by Rajesh – A full length comedy. Jeeva and Anuya had the huge chemistry that made the entire movie worthwhile. A must see, if all you want to do is laugh and roll with joy.
Kunguma Poovum Konjum Puraavum by Rajamohan – I hold this movie in high esteems. I think it was a wonderful attempt. The newcomers were naturals. The flow of the story was good. And, the songs were amazing. A Tamil sparkler.
Pasanga by Pandiraj – The movie I recommend to everyone. This is like a directors dream. It earned high critical acclaims, bagging three National Film Awards and several other awards at International Film Festivals. A simple storyline involving two foes who eventually become friends. There are so many heart touching scenes in the movie. You can watch the numerous times and not get bored. Believe me.
Nadodigal by Samuthrakanni – I am a Samuthrakanni fan. I think he oozes appeal and charm. Like the flow of his movies, as well as his acting abilities, but unsure on the way he handles his mega serials. His movies score a big 10, to me, though. This movie was a super hit, thanks to its original screenplay. Not your norm Tamil movie. Give it a try. It is definitely worth the watch.
Pokkisham by Cheran – How could the mass not appreciate a pure, love story like this ? It is, indeed, very hard to please the Indian audience. This movie is a classic. Slow paced but nevertheless, one priceless production, not to be missed. You need to be artistic and broad minded to enjoy this.
Eeram by Arivazhagan – A very good Tamil thriller. The movie progresses well and will keep you glued and wondering, what will happen next. A good bet on a day when you need something surprising.
Unnai Pol Oruvan by Chakri Tholeti – Terrorism countered at its best. Kamal is among the very few who can put and relay things in a logical manner. That is what he did in this movie. Another fact paced movie that will keep you seated until the end.
Yogi by Subramania Siva – Many disagreed with me on this one. But, like told earlier, I am not here to write about mass favoured movies. I am writing about those with  zeal, and distinct and impromptu. This fits the bill, perfectly. On how the arrival of  a kidnapped child changes everything in a rebel’s life. Ameer and Madhumita awed me with their outstanding performance.
Renigunta by R. Paneerselvam – Again, people thought I must be crazy to actually recommend this movie. They said that it looked dirty and the actors were a messy lot. For heaven’s sake, movies are supposed to be done with a huge sense of reality. If you want something prim and proper, then, you are not of my taste. Despite the grueling violence this movie had, the final moral of the story is a brilliant message to the youth out there. A valuable movie that you should not miss.
2010
Angadi Theru by Vasanthabalan – A gem of a movie. A quantum leap in the Tamil film industry. There were many parts of this movie that moved me to tears. It was done in such great taste that missing this one would be equivalent to missing the entire contemporary Tamil movie industry. Wholesomely gratifying. This is one which will make you see life in a whole new dimension.
Vinnaithaandi Varuvaayaa by Gautham Menon – Everyone’s favourite love story of 2010. Simbu at his best, to date, I would say.
Raavanan by Maniratnam – I was never a fan of Vikram until this one. The performance he gave was intense and mind boggling. It is only Mani Ratnam who can do justice to special issues like these.
Madrasapattinam by A.L.Vijay – The movie I so love. An amazing story. The pre-Indian-Independence era was pictured beautifully. And, such heartwarming Tamil songs, with exquisite Tamil lyrics. I was definitely bowled over.
Boss Engira Bhaskaran by M.Rajesh – A full length comedy. Enjoyed it to the very last despite many finding it a way bit annoying. Tastes differ.
Easan by Sasikumar – An audacious attempt that went unnoticed. The lives of the rich and famous in present day Chennai. Special mention for Dushy (Jayaprakash)’s acting as Easan, himself. A moving screenplay, which will make you wish that life could be fairer to those who are not financially endowed.
Naan Mahaan Alla by Susindran – There is only one thing I want to say about this movie. The gallant, daring and headstrong ending.
Kalavani by Sargunam – Another original screenplay, set in a rural backdrop. Lots of funny moments. The hero charms with his witty ways. This is a good one, which again, did not appeal to the mass.
Aval Peyar Thamizharasi by Meera Kathiravan – This is a 2010 surprise. A sad tale of love between a puppeteer’s daughter and the grandson of a rich man and how love can actually make you do the cruelest of things.
Naanayam by Shakti S. Rajan – A modern day Tamil thriller which was done tastefully. It will keep you guessing until the end.
Baana Kathadi by Badri Venkat – I liked this movie for the untainted friendship and love between the hero and heroine, which was done with grace and purity. Nothing to shout about, but a relatively good one.
Inidhu Inidhu by K.V Guhan – 8 newcomers in a movie, but they aced themselves through like old timers. They were just downright natural. A great movie which received rave reviews from many.
Drohi by Sudha K Prasad – I am a “Drohi” buff. Vishnu and Srikanth won me over with their outstanding performance. I think this movie is worth every moment.
Mynaa by Prabu Solomon - Beautiful everything. The storyline. The scenic location. The childhood love. The songs. The emotions. The what-it-is-like-to-have-a-soul-mate movie.
2011
Aadukalam by Vetrimaran – I am an ardent fan of this movie, and of Dhanush. I look forward to this winning many awards. An awesome storyline completed with a sterling performance. And, evergreen, lovable songs. Must watch.
Yuddham Sei by Myshkin – A new age Tamil thriller. A whodunit. You will be surprised by the outcome. Slow moving and confusing at times, but a good watch.
Nadunissi Naaygal from Gautham Menon – Rather gruesome for a Tamil movie, but Gautham Menon must be praised for his brave attempt. Fairly good despite the brickbats he received from his South Indian fans.
Kathalar Kudiyirupu by A.M.R Ramesh – I watched this a few days back, and thought it had a real good storyline. This movie is practically invisible when you search the web. I caught the trailer by chance, and found way to watch it. The hero and heroine were candid and forthright despite being debutantes. I have been recommending this to many of my friends, of lately, without much response. Zealots are becoming extinct, I guess.
Kullanari Koottam by Sribalaji – A current must watch. Vishnu continues to amaze me. He is a promising actor. A normal love story with a beautiful twist. A comedy and a family entertainer.

The 2011 & 2012 updates are over here. Do read, as well.

Pavadai Thavaniyil Paartha Uruvamo from Nichiya Thamboolam

One of my father's favourite songs. He used to sing it, and hum it, and whistle it. Heard it on TV, last Sunday. And, the memories came flooding back. My father, my Appa. How I miss him despite the years. And, how he is and will be strongly etched in my heart, forever.
Old songs are evergreen. I believe, that despite the years, everyday, someone, somewhere, somehow will listen to this song. My turn today. Lyrics ? Did you pay attention ? Mind blowing. I so, love this song.

Yen Arumai Kathalikku Venilavavey from Ellorum Innaatu Mannar

This is such a lovely song. From the 1960's. I think it is still, so very romantic, despite the years. Appa used to sing and hum this song. He introduced me to lovely old, classical Tamil songs such as these. I have been hooked since. How can anyone not fall for beautiful songs like this one.
I am actually dead tired, but it has been a while, since my last post, so here, I am. And, here, is my song of the day. Old songs live forever. This one is a good example.
From a movie directed by T Prakash Rao, this beautiful evergreen number was sung by TM Sounderarajan with music by TG Lingappa and lyrics by P Kalyanasundaram. What-a-song!!
http://www.paadal.com/album/ellorum_innaattu_mannar
Check the first song.
Will try to donwload the song in MP3 one of these days, if the weekend promises me of longer hours to unwind. Till then, take care, God Bless - whoever you are, wherever, whenever.

Thooral Nindraalum from Chikku Bukku

I am dead tired. I am dog tired. My eyes are exhausted. My soul is weary. My heart is vexing. Narcoleptic. Overworked. Run down. And, worn out. And, I miss my father, up there in heaven. All I want to do next is log off from my laptop, turn of the light and suspend consciousness. Saturday tomorrow. Meaning I get to sleep, and stay on bed much longer than the other days.
I watched this movie here and there. There are two stories that run parallel in this movie. I love the one from the past. And, this song is something that I related to, the very first time I heard it. Adore the fact that some tinge of Ghazal has been infused in this song. A different genre. And, lyrics, that I so like.
Good night everyone. Slumber is calling.

Sollathaan Ninaikiren Sollamaal Tavikiren from Kathal Sugamanathu

It is 11.15am here, right now, in Malaysia. The legendary Meenakshi Kalyanam day. The day Shiva directed Meenakshi to return to Madurai, and promised her that he would join her in eight days as her groom. Accordingly, Meenakshi returned to Madurai, and at the appointed time, the divine wedding was celebrated with pomp and splendour. Maha Vishnu, believed to be the brother of Meenakshi is said to have given the bride away. Ugra Pandyan the son of the divine couple is believed to be none other than Subramanya. The legend of Meenakshi Kalyanam brings together four of the six main streams in popular Hinduism i.e. the Saiva,Shakta, Vaishnava and Skanda faiths – and this grand culmination of faiths is still celebrated in great splendour today, in an enactment of Meenakshi Kalyanam each year, when images of Skanda and Vishnu are brought to the Madurai Meenakshi temple from Tirupparamkunram nearby. How beautiful. My favourite Gods and Goddess stand together, in this auspicious occasion. My Shivan, my Shakti, my Muruga and my Thirupathi. This promising day.
My anticipation of this promising Saturday did not go to waste. Saturday's have been always memorable. In fact, it started as early as 11pm Friday. I was in bed, just about to go to sleep. Saw a missed call back at 6.09pm. How could I? Missed him and his phone call. And, a message. Must have been busy. Real busy. Never does his name not catch my eye. Never. I must have been daydreaming. I return his call, at that very moment. 11.19pm. He picks up within the 3rd ring. "How ? Was just sending you a message. So, was I in your dreams ?", he asks sheepishly. I laugh. Genuinely. How do you explain this intuition between two hearts, separated by distance, but held together by a mystifying feeling, and how much of your heart that they actually hold, without even realizing it. He continues to tease me. As always. Only this time around, they have become very expressive and significant. I continue to laugh my heart out. His presence is prime to me, although it is just a mere phone call which lasts 15 minutes. Mogan, I wish I had words to tell you how happy you make me. How content and blissful it is to hear you whisper all those sweet somethings. And, how I am truly and honestly ecstatic in your presence.
Waking up early to wake him up is a duty I enjoy. On Saturdays. He beats me to it, though. Nice. To wake up to that husky, masculine, just-out-of-shower voice. He has an abundant sense of humour. Any time of the day. He teases me. A continuation of yesterday. I, love it, despite all. I am laughing, unquestionably. It is unaffected and sincere. My laughs - with him. Appa use to do that to me. Make me laugh - genuinely. He does it now. He goes to temple on Pournamis. Tomorrow is one. I remind him. He says he may be busy. I pacify him, that I will go instead. He agrees with a smile that I can feel through his voice. Beautiful isn't it ? Two hearts, so much of distance and yet a monumental amount of unity in thoughts and hearts and laughter.  I adore him in heaps, mass and mountains. I do - undoubtedly.
This song is dedicated to him. The one who I talk so much about, to Appa. The one who makes me laugh like I am in the midst of the world's greatest comedy film. The one who plants a million butterflies in my heart. The one who makes me feel like going to bed is a trip to paradise. The one who makes me wish that every phone call and sms on my mobile is his. The one who makes me feel that every knock on the door is him. He makes me a poet.
Thanks you God. For everything. Appa, I know you are reading this. And, listening to everything in my heart. Please stand by me. By us. M, I pray for our hands to walk as one......

Nenjangkootil Neeye Nirkirai from Dishyum

A day after the Tamil New Year, Kara. My favourite day of the week. Friday. The anticipation towards Saturday itself, is a delight.
14th April 2011. He wishes me as early as 6.30am. I ask where is the "my dear" clause that he so often uses. He replies with one. I am all smiles. Joy is instant, at hand, and in abundance.
I desperately need to post a duet today. He informs me that he will come in my dreams, to sing a good duet. I request for a sentimental one. He differs. He wants some 'kuthu' song. I am, again, all smiles. The only 'kuthu' song that I am shamelessly crazy about is that "Otha Sollala" song from Aadukalam. No other song from that genre has ever been able to touch me that deep. That song is just out of the world. The one that makes you go va-va-voom, and sustains it forever. I am lost. I cannot think of one that can rival that.
The only song that comes to mind is this. Nenjangkootil Neeye Nirkirai from Dishyum. Not a sentimental duet. Neither the 'kuthu' he likes. Something that came to mind at the wink of eye. Lyrics deserve special mention for being idiosyncratic and uncommon.
I am super sleepy now. Hit the bed is all want to do next. Waiting for him to come in my dreams, will be a beautiful anticipation.

Ondraa Iranda Aasaigal from Kaaka Kaaka

Hours away from our Tamil New Year. Today went well. I have been humming this song for a few days now. This movie was a blockbuster hit. I thought it was my movie of the year. It was, the movie of the year too, actually - winning plenty of awards in the film industry. A milestone in the Tamil cinema. One of Gautham Vasudev Menon's most amazing movies. From songs, screenplay and cinematography - everything was flawless.
I did not like this song as much as I did some others back then. I was more a fan of "Ennai Konjum Maatri" and "Oru Ooril Azhage Endru" song. This just didn't make me stand up. Back then, I mean.
Things have taken a quantum leap since a week or so. I am presently an enthusiast of this song. I hum, doing my work. These particular lines are my favourite. In fact, I am all zeal for this song due to this particular lines.
I hit the sack early nowadays. 10pm and I am on bed, soundly asleep as a log. Everything has been a little tiring of lately. Sweet dreams, and good night. This song will lullaby you to dreamland. Believe me.

Paarthu Paarthu from Nee Varuvai Enna

I swear he has beautiful eyes. Eyes that speak a million words without uttering any. And, he has a smile that touches you like an angel. A smile that brings Siberian snowfall to our so-humid-now weather.
This song is what comes to mind when I think of his warm smile and starry eyes.
The female version. Nice. A very simple, hassle free melody, and lyrics that describe a girl's longing for her sweetheart, in simple language.
Friday in the next few hours. I am dead tired even now. All I want to do is retire to bed. Looking for the video is hard. All that is available is the male version.

Pallaviye Saranam from Oruvar Vaalum Aalayam

Consider how hard it is to change yourself and you'll understand what little chance you have in trying to change others.  ~Jacob M. Braude~
You hesitate to stab me with a word, and know not - silence is the sharper sword.  ~Samuel Johnson~
Today's song is from Oruvar Vaalum Aalayam, and is titled Pallaviye Saranam. It is from the carnatic genre, but an awesome one. I fell in love with the songs for it's so very sentimental lyrics.
I realized many things today. Many. That sometimes, expectations, can hurt. That sometimes, things just do not go the way we want it too. That, people, have different characters, and expecting and hoping they would be parallel to our thoughts and liking, is way too big an expectation, and is equally unfair.
Tomorrow comes. Let me ask the Almighty for a better day. A happier one. Today has been taxing and tiring. Dinner is done. Slumber comes next. This is the song I am listening to. Enjoying the lyrics. You do, too.

En Uyir Thozhi from Karnan

Sunday is here. So fast. It was just like Friday evening, a few hours ago. Time passes. That is why they say so, I guess. Now, I need to start longing for the next Friday evening.
My father raised me by singing lots of beautiful, Tamil songs. I loved them, then, and still do, now. I guess, I owe him one. I owe him lots, actually -for everything. He is what I am today. And, despite him not being around, everything good I do, is an acclamation to him. He is my thoughts all the time.
If I can actually appreciate this En Uyir Thozhi song from the 1964 release, Karnan, like so many other old songs enthusiasts, then I have no one, but my father, to thank. He instilled my passion for old Tamil songs and movies, and the beautiful ancient language, itself.
This song is beautiful. Just like my father. He was beautiful - in heart, soul and all. He still is, to me. Forever, will be. Not a second passes by without me missing him. He lives in my heart and will do so forever. Love you, my darling Appa. God bless you soul.

Kangale Kamalalayam from Bale Pandiya

Sometimes, a song you hear on the radio, out of the blue, can make you sit up, and wonder, how it went unnoticed, to music enthusiasts. This is what this song practically did, to me. I thought it was soothing, soft and sentimental. And, with an eagle eye over its lyrics, I confirmed this as the song I would like to post, next.
Kangale Kamalalayam from Bale Pandiya. Yes, I like Vishnu's acting, and mum raved about it being a comedy, but did not manage to watch the whole movie, though. Give it a try. This song is no va-va-voom like my favourite anthem from Aadukalam, but it is very soothing. And, the video presentation is good. Looks like PY, in those videos. My mum's native. Pondicherry.
Ya, give it a try. You might like it. I did.

Megam Rendu Serum Pothu from Poi Mugangal

எதிரில் நீ வரும் போதுமேளருறேன்  ஏன் தானோ
கண் சிமிட்டும் தீயேஎன்ன எரிச்சு புட்ட நீயே
I am as sleepy as a koala. As a koala ? How long do these animals actually sleep ? Googling for information, as I write my post of the day.
OMG. Oh My God. The details just surprised me. My eyes are popping out, and my sleepy koala has since migrated to Alaska. They sleep an average of 22 hours a day. And, there is only 24 hours, in one. Why wake up for the remaining two? They could just continue and be in hibernation, right? Hahaha. Whatever. God bless Koalas. They are becoming extinct, despite all that sleep...
The lines above are from my present favourite number. The song I am listening to right now.
I turned around to catch him looking at me, with his all-so-famous grin. Twice. And, both were intense and empowering moments.
Today turned out brilliantly. I thank God for everything he is blessing me with.
And, even this moment, when happiness fills my heart to the brim, there are two things which I so miss - very much. My father. And, my India. Wish my father was around. Wish India was nearer. Wishes - they never end, do they?
Friday comes tomorrow. Looking forward to some unwinding and lots of housekeeping.
I love this song. SPB sang this one in programme, and I liked it instantly. The soft melody and the immensely beautiful lyrics. I wish more people would enjoy this song as much as what I do. What-a-song..... Keywords : Lyrics. Lyrics. Lyrics.

Pakkathile Iruppen from Thedi Vantha Selvam

He wishes me good morning. Then, turns around, and, practically, gives me a fixed stare, with those beautiful, deep eyes. I wish him back, and smile - in a daze. He electrifies me. Has always. Will continue to.
He calls around at 11.04am. That throaty, husky voice greets me, as always, and continues to tease me. I bloom  a smile, and flourish a big a laughter. He makes these two come easily, when he is around. He has an immense sense of humour - which is obviously present, all the time.
He asks me out. Any Saturday. "Lets go eat," he says. I am flabbergasted. He stuns me. "Next month?" he asks, again. I am at a lost for words. I tell him I will let him know. He laughs. He asks me if it will take me another 4 years to reply. I return his laughter and say, "Another 5". The conversation continues.....
Long since that phone call, but I am still radiating. And, at this very moment, I am listening, to what else, but Ayayo Nenju Alayuthudi from Aadukalam. On loop. Replay mode.
This is an old song. From Thedi Vantha Selvam. It is funny, blithe and merry. Hahaha. Watch the video.... Very encouraging lyrics.

Oru Pennai Paarthu from Anbey Vaa

This morning I watched episode 391 of Raagamaliga. Haricharan sang this number, and he was just mind blowing. I am embarrassed and stunned that it took me 45 years to actually appreciate this number. Haricharan called this jive music. I would like to call it happy music. The music and the meaningful lyrics just go hand in hand. Unfortunately, and yet again, this is the male version. A female one would have been perfect. The exact song I would choose to sing to him - in the heavy rain, hopping and jiving along the beach pavement. Sounds like some old Tamil movie. Well, what else do you get from a faithful, Tamil movie buff like yours truly ?
Old is gold. 100%. Listen to this one. You will understand. The music is sure to get your feet tapping. And, the lyrics is sure to bring heavy snow fall in your heart. Enjoy.

Kanninimai Pole from Anwar

Today is Saturday. And this, was another special, significant one. SPB, SP Charan and Prashantini 's awesome love duet, Ayayo Nenju Alayuthadi, is what plays on my mind, heart and soul - all the time. It is such a dreamy number. So love this song, that this is all I hum, whenever, whatever. It brings a smile, a chill to the heart and a breeze to the soul.
He says good morning. He says he was wondering how come I have yet to call. He sounds genuine. It sounds beautiful. Just like my current favourite song. I fall back asleep. It feels like a dream. It happened for real and yet it seems like a dream.
It is raining, outside. And, alike, it is raining amour in my heart. Sweet. Saturdays are sweet.
Watched this on Sun Music a few days back. Sounds sweet. Just the way my Saturday was.

Unnai Ninaikavey from Jay Jay

Been missing my dad, lots, of lately. Lots. I do not know why. But he is my thoughts, more often. More often, than ever. Sometimes, I think of the times we used to spend together. At others, I cry myself over all those beautiful memories, we shared, while he was still around. It has been 22 years now. Since that dreadful 3rd September 1990. So many years have passed, but memories of Appa flood me all the time. I was, indeed, the apple of his eye. Was his darling Kannamah. I, was, practically, everything - to him. I do not have any doubt on that. He adored me heaps. I still believe he does - from up above, amongst those heavenly clouds. His love keeps me going. It always will.
Today was beautiful. It will be long remembered. Imprinted in my heart. My second Valentine’s Day. Ya. He continues to make me smile. I am, currently, listening, to my all time favourite, Enthan Uyire from Unnarage Naan Irunthaal. Such a sentimental number. Mind blowing lyrics. I love this song. This is practically what I would like to tell him. Really. Anyone's heart would melt to this one. Again, really.
Appa... I wish you were around. Everything would have been rosier. Minus the thorns. I am sure you would have liked him. He makes me very happy. Just like what you did. And still do, with the memories you have left behind. I laugh at practically everything he says. No, I do not make them up. Those barrels of laughter. I really do. Wholeheartedly. Naturally. He is sweet. Just like you, Appa.
Here, I go again. All teary eyed and missing my father, more than ever. No guy will ever be able to replace you, Pa. You were the best, and will remain, so no matter what. The greatest. The first man of my life. My superhero. My idol. Miss you, Pa. Lots. Please keep me in your prayers, as I do you.
Appa, for being the best, for always – I love you, for everything and for ever.
Rest in peace. Your darling daughter is fine. She will always be – as long as you watch her over, from right up there.
This song is for him. The guy who makes me laugh heartily. The one who reminds me of all the laughter Appa brought into my life.

Koorana Parvaigal from Thoonga Nagaram

Some songs just catch you by surprise. They do not become mega hits. They do not appeal to the mass. And, yet, they bolt and buckle you, - somehow. This is what the song that I am posting today, did to me. I was just browsing through some current songs, and this tunefulness made me a fan. Like the soft harmony and the simple Tamil lyrics. A good listen when all you want to do is off the lights, roll on the bed, and hug the pillow for warmth - and smile, secretly, over those sweet memories, that flood you.
I was supposed to watch Thoonga Nagaram while I was in Madurai, but couldn't. The title of the movie, does refer to this famous Temple City, after all. Tried to, again, while I was in Chennai, and failed, the second time, around, as well. Right now, back in Malaysia, I am waiting for the original DVD.
It is a Sunday afternoon. Hot and sunny. Chennai would be the same right now. My Chennai. Just two and a half hours behind. That's all. My metropolitan city would be bustling with life. I miss her. Very much. The affinity I share for this city is mystifying. It must have to do something with my past life. Sure, of that, though. I am, unashamedly, crazy, crazy about Chennai, Tamil Nadu and India - in that exact order. No European cities for me. I am, all Indian.
Go enjoy the Sunday. Hours away before Manic Monday knocks on our doors. Life is beautiful, when you make it so. Have a great one !! A great Sunday, and a great life - ahead. Cheers from Shalu.

Then Then Then from Kuruvi

Saturdays. When, the first thing that I hear, is that, deep, throaty, husky, all so romantic "Good Morning ". Same today. This morning, I realized something new. That he is comical. He was. Even, at such an early hour. He makes me laugh at his wittiness, and smile at his humour. I am glad, and, overwhelmed. This genuine, 24 carat happiness is beautiful. My heart feels calm. Thanks to the Almighty. Thanks to him. The one who drowns me in snow with his frosty Siberian smile.
Weekends are wonderful. Unwinding at home, is just so relaxing. Tea and freshly baked cookies are just minutes away.
This one has apt lyrics. Words that I would like to say, but somehow cannot. Then, meaning honey, in Tamil. Honey. Sweet. Heart. Whatever........ Smile - to this superb Saturday.

Pani Thuli, Pani Thuli from Kanda Naal Muthal

My days, of lately, have been, lovely. Everything is sweet and winning. He has become steadfast. Constantly caring. And, zealous. Ya. Zealous - very at times - that I am left dazed and startled. It is, no doubt, a state of amazement. An exchange of sweet nothings has become routine.
This 'Otha Sollala' song from Aadukalam is like a shot in the arm. The energy of the song just hoists you up. I am listening to it on replay - now. Yours truly is a non-kuthu song fan - but this one is exceptional. An unprecedented kuthu song.
This song is for him. He brings Alaskan snow to my scorching El Azizia domain. With that spine-tingling smile. I get moonstruck, early in the morning. Doesn't matter if I do not make sense. It is not supposed to.
Lyrics are just right on - for him, for me, for the moments we share. God bless, this happiness, this beautiful, meaningful, craziness - for a lifetime.

Sandhosham Indru Sandhosham from Manithanin Marupakkam

Yet again. I am ecstatic. And upbeat. Been so for a few days now. Days have been promising. Want them, so badly, to remain so, for always. I have been listening countlessly, to my heart's current anthem , "Ayyayo Nenju Alaiyuthudi" from Aadukalam. It is such an intoxicating number. S.P.Bala, S.P.Charan & Prashanthini have sung this song with so much of charm and passion. This song is my risk less, love drug...... What-ta-song!!!
Right now,.......
If my heart was a room - it would be The Penthouse Suite at The Martinez Hotel in Cannes.
If my heart was a sweet - it would be made of Sugar Cane, 2000 times sweeter than sucrose.
If my heart was an island - it would be the beautiful Galápagos.
If my heart was a Greek Goddess - it would be Aphrodite.
If my heart was a flower - it would be the Canna.
If my heart was a car - it would be the Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Super Sport, travelling at 267 mph.
If my heart was a display of fireworks - it would be the Olympic 2008 opening ceremonies in Beijing.
If my heart was a language - it would DEFINITELY be the poetic, formal Tamil.
If my heart was a fruit - it would be Gariguette' and 'Mara des Bois' strawberries.
If my heart was a diamond - it would be the Kohinoor from Golconda, Andhra Pradesh.
If my heart was a bird - it would be the Golden Pheasant (Chrysolophus pictus).
If my heart was a spice - it would be the cinnamon.
If my heart was a mountain - it would be the Vinson Massif in Antarctica, with a record temperature of −128.6 °F. (FYI - He brings snow into my heart)
If my heart was a poem - it would be "I carry your heart with me" by E. E. Cummings.
Want to go have a cat nap. He brings Antarctica's snow into my hot-as-El Azizia room.
What song for today ? For happy, happy today.

Yenaachey, Yenaachey from Vaamsam.

He keeps tabs on me. Nice. He watches over. Beautiful. He dotes and devotes. Meaningful. I am on seventh heaven. I am speaking the language of love. Pardon me, if they are grammatically incorrect.
8 appel entrants. 10 les appels manqués. 4 messages. depuis le 3 mars 2011.
il m'a tenu éveillé sur le 4 mars avec ses appels. il a été belle...................
The song that I listened somewhere, some time back, and popped up, today, at the very thought of him. Superb, tickling lyrics.
For him. Only him.

Sada Sada from Kaavalan.

"i carry your heart(i carry it in my heart)..........." the last line in the famous "i carry your heart with me" by E.E. Cummings
For being there for me - when I needed you most. For making me happy. For making me laugh. For keeping me smiling. For listening to me. For saying sweet nothings. For those beautiful, unending conversations. For caring. For holding me dear. For the attention you shower. For the beaming smile you give. For being genuinely you. For bringing snow to my blazing, scorching climate. Ya, snow. You have been bringing that to me, so often, now. You ARE the Antartica, in my Lut Desert.
When distance is a barrier, speech is reluctant and only words are transcribed - this came in as the sweetest of sweet.
"Don't worry, I will be there, when you go to sleep......." at 6.56pm on this big-league day.
This song reminds me of you. All of you. If I was a lyricist, this is exactly, what I would have written about you - but, in Tamil, masculine gender.
I carry your heart. I carry it in my heart. Really do. I know. God knows........

Taakuudhe Kann Thakuudhe from Baana Kaathadi

Day 1
He takes the holy ash from my palms. Even his finger nails do not brush me. I am startled. Taken aback. How purely sweet. How genuinely beautiful. He scores 10 for Day 1.
Day 2
A state holiday comes next. Jams are just waiting to start. In fact, they have started in some places. Public transportation is going to be a mess. It may take hours to reach home. A female colleague from hometown drove her two wheeler, this morning. She asks me to follow. I am unsure. But the invitation is a good way for me to not get caught in the holiday hustle. He calls. I ask him for an extra headgear. He asks, why. I explain. He responds immediately and persuasively, not to. He says it will be dangerous. He advises. He urges. And convinces. I tell him I won't. He can take my word. He actually called to send me lunch. Vegetarian. Sweet. He scores another 10 for Day 2.
Day 3
The Pandi Bazaar roads are brimming with autos, cars, bicycles, buses and every mode of transportation you can imagine. Mum is walking beside me. The sound of horns are abundant. Chennai is always like that. He calls. He talks. He goes into silent mode. Then, as sweet and slow, as the cool sea breeze, he wishes me. He was building up courage, I guess. Siberian cold weather embraces my blazing hot Chennai. Nice. Again sweet. Sweeter than all those toothsome stuff in Krisha Sweets and Adyar Ananda Bhawan's. It was Valentine's. And, he scored a big 10 - again.
Moral of story
He is making grades. Gradually. Hahaha. Sounds like some school report.
Song for the Score
Taakuudhe Kann Thakuudhe from Baana Kaathadi. Lyrics are 100% apt, and a big 100 total score for all three days. You need to listen to every line. Patiently. How germane it is for my situation......

Malaiyooru Naatamai from Mambattiyan (2011)

Love is like a war:Easy to begin Hard to end!
I cracked open a love cookie at Horoscope.Com, and that is what it said. Oh, ya. What news. I mean, what information. I have loads of work to do. But am feeling all restless and edgy. Nothing to blame this mood swing on. We all have those days, do not we? When, all you want to do is, go to the quieter part of the beach, lie on a large towel spread on the silky soft sand with the cool continuous breeze sweeping on you, gaze at the blue skies and the cotton clouds, and listen to the waves symphony you to slumber land. Hmm. Sounds lovely. Wish I could get up and drag myself there, right now. Wishful thinking. Work. Lots of them. All pending and delayed.
I want something happy for today. Something cheerful and joyous. My mind is playing arpeggios. Thinking. What? What? What? First choice, would of course, be Othasollala from Aadukalam. But, that has been done. What next? Happy. Ya. I know. A very new song. Heard it on Tamilwire, first. From the upcoming Malaiyoor Mambatiyan 2011. Playful lyrics to a rather fetching melody. Happy music. Foot tapping music.
Love is NEVER like a war. Whoever said that must be a lunatic. Love is peace, truce, compromise, agreement, calm, concord and stability. It is a beautiful beginning and one without an end. Infinity. Ubiquity. If you have been in love, you would know. Love teaches us to be optimist, and never the other way around. I am - optimistic, and looking forward to a bed of roses with the Almighty's blessings - all while, being love. You do too. Leave the skeptic in his primeval space.

Thirudiya Idhayathai Tirupikodu from Paarvai Ondre Podhume

Sticks and stones are hard on bones
Aimed with angry art,
Words can sting like anything
But silence breaks the heart.
~Phyllis McGinley, "Ballade of Lost Objects," 1954~

Ya. Silence breaks the heart. Doesn't it? I am appeasing myself with Othasollala song from Aadukalam. It makes me happy. I tap my feet to the catchy rhythm. My ear plugs are on full blast. It keeps my thoughts on the video clip of the movie, and the level of immense happiness Dhanush @ K.P.Karuppu was in. Cool. Saturday here. And, in Chennai. I miss her. Tremendously. She is just bustling and lively. The metropolitan city that never sleeps. And, miss too, the rest of Tamil Nadu, and the country where my soul STILL and ACTUALLY resides. I have chores to do. And, here I am, in front of my faithful notebook, listening to songs and updating my blog. I wish a million things.
This is such a melancholic song. Not really for a zealot like me. But, something about it caught my attention. No. Definitely not the video. The simple melody, I guess. Hum worthy. Is that a new word? I meant to say, it is worth the hum. Haha. Sad though, that both the hero and the heroine are no more. May they rest in peace.
Remember. Hum worthy. When you have finished listening to the entire song, give it a hum. You will nice. I did. And, I am.
Life goes on. Conversations, silence, feelings and rationalization. Whatever. Have a super Saturday. I am looking forward to one. God bless.

Ayayo Nenju Alaiyuthadi from Aadukalam.

It is official. My Valentine's Day 2011 - was legitimately celebrated on 21st February 2011, a beautiful Monday evening. What transpired on 14th February 2011, was a verbal inauguration. Guess, I wrote about it, in my last post.
I do not have words to describe how beautiful the day turned out to be. It, was, just heavenly. And sweet, and stirring. The song that sweeps my mind, right now, at the very thought, of those staggering moments, is, this sentimental and sappy number. The lyrics are a perfect manifestation my heart........
To Mogan - again, this one, if for you. Happy Valentine's Day.

Pesakudathu from Adutha Varisu

I am back. On Malaysian soil. And, yes, I AM missing India.
I am listening to this beautiful number by SPB and P.Susheela. Picked it up during a concert by the legendary SPB himself on Valentine's eve, in Chennai. The female part was sung by someone else. This song is mischievous and playful.
Coming back to V-Day. I am smiling. 11.13am, Indian time. 1.43pm Malaysian. My mobile rings "Kannil Anbai" song from Eesan. My heart skips a beat. I am hoping but unsure. I read my caller ID. My heart skips a few more beats. I am beaming in delight. Cupid strikes me in Chennai. How sweet. How winsome. As I answer the phone, this is what transpires, (mostly in Tamil......)
Me : Hello
He : Vanakam. (The Tamil equivalent to Hello in English)
Me : Vanakam. (Chiming him, in Tamil) So, how are you ?
He : I am fine. You ?
Me : Fine.
He : Tried calling you the other day but could not get through.
Me : Ya. My brother complained of the same issue too.
There is pin drop silence. He is quiet for a few seconds. I am dumbfounded. Then,......
He : Happy Valentine's Day.
Me : (laughing) Thanks.... (again, pin drop silence from my side). Same to you.
And, quickly, we change topic. To Chennai, and work, and Malaysia, and my return dates. We hang up about 5 minutes later.
He calls in the afternoon, again. 4.38pm Indian. We exchange formal conversations. Beautiful. Right then, I disconnected the call with a smile in my heart. Now, recollecting that moment, I am smiling to the lyrics of this song.
Not posting the video for this song. It was done in bad taste. Not my cuppa.
